I've had my PD for 18 months and it does the exact same thing as yours. The same with the black shakes, smells like something burning after you shake it. Still works but all your worries are the same as mine.

I took the car adapter cut 2 feet off, cut 2 feet off the broken ac adpter and spliced the wires together. Now I have heavy duty plug and wire works fine.
