That's usually how I use my ZX, and it's great for that, too. I still prefer to use the ZX for that purpose, as it's so much more efficient than 18mm/22mm ballers.

Were it possible, I think you'd need an Auber or one you can change the settings on if you want the temperature control anywhere close to accurate. I'm not sure how things would change for a kanthal coil instead of a typical coil
