The solid valve works just fine for small loads. Well enough that Ive never even considered using the pad as filler. I have used the pad in easy valves and that does seem to improve the vapor quality.

I cut a pipe screen to fit a can. I put a small amount in the can, put the screen over the herb and tamp it down. I then put the lid on. It works great for small doses.
