Yes- you definitely need a screen on top. Btw, I never use the basket, just load straight it. Just clean out after each load and it stays pretty clean. Sometimes a qtip with iSO is needed for the inside and you need to soak the screens, but not that often.

Good choice! My wife depends on the Minivap now. At first she questioned the price, but it is such a key part of her pain management now. Been using it for 1.5 years now solid, mostly on AC power. When I get a new strain, I can't wait to try it in the minivap- the flavor is always the best.
