I actually put an empty ELB in with the cap off thinking I could get a good read off the bottom of the mesh basket but didn't have any luck with that...

With the dial cranked to 5, the thermometer would sometimes show readings in the 700 degree range... which is what made me think it wasn't a super accurate read.

Uhhh... how on earth do you manage to do that? I'm imagining you as Andre The Giant trying to pack an ELB but just having such excessive size and strength you destroy each one. Eventually you just smash them out of frustration and let out giant roar.

Maybe it's not an ELB issue but rather a bamboo issue... what if some folks are getting EVOs with slightly wider internal bamboo diameter?

Why not fill it with just water first and hit the HT without the EVO. Then slowly add more water until you find the ideal level. THEN add Rez after you've found the perfect level.

I take it out and give it a little shake.

If it functions, I'd buy it in a heartbeat for $50 shipped. I think the melty aspect looks kinda trippy!

Just as an additional data point, one of the 2 ELBs that came in my original starter kit was split down the seem. When I contacted them, they immediately shipped out another - when I opened the package, I was surprised and delighted to find a 4 pack! :) All of them fit great, one of the lids...

You put the flower in the long one and then the short one slides into the top of the long one - it's the "lid" to keep the flowers from getting sucked up. You can invert it using flowers and the baskets, you can't invert using nails.

I tend to hold my evo like a saxophone when using the HT, with the side mounted mouthpiece at the highest point. This lets gravity keep the water from splashing up the mouth tube.
