Up the sides of the insert or sides of the banger? Honestly never had a problem with oil creeping up the side of my 19mm ruby, but if you have a spouted carb cap and inhale too hard you can fairly easily splatter oil onto the sidewalls of the banger.

I would say yes. That is how the Focus V Carta and Puffco Peak both work, extremely simple to use.
