I think the best option is sapphire. A close second, but much cheaper option is stainless steel balls. I haven't tried ruby but maybe it's in between? Quartz balls were ok imo. They just don't grab as much heat as other options.

Sapphire pearls held in place with screens will suck up a lot of heat, even in the shorter stem. I still use the CU housing, but emptied it of all the screws and washers and just fill them up with various cooling balls.
