Bump the temp to 420-450 because the ceramic needs to warm up as well. Not just the wire. There will be about 20-30F difference between wire and ceramic.

Yes air flow is from the bottom but with the bigger surface area i have yet to see one drop of oil from my tester that is used about 10 times a day to test batteries. But then again this isnt real world testing it is just my experience, im sure @limbs can chime in as he has one as well to test.
