Color of ABV is only one part of the equation. Strength of original product, IME , comes into play as well. I've had darker brown ABV from some Top Shelf, that in terms of effect, blew the doors off some light ABV from Mids.

I've done the sandwich and wax on cotton, works well. Just don't use more wax than your herb (or cotton) can absorb. Too much wax and it will melt and fall onto the heater.
