Hearing about the experiences of others--and seeing photos of janky build quality--makes it fairly impossible not to give up on it. Honestly, I did. I don't want to wind up with a $250 paperweight like the rest of these poor folks.

Back to the OP's original question (:D), a relatively inexpensive portable with the same form factor as a dugout (my former tool of choice) is the Firewood. It does involve a bit of a learning curve because you are pressing a button to control the heating, but that makes it absolutely perfect...

I use a cheap, no-name grinder a friend picked up for me on Amazon, and it works great for the Firewood. That said, the material you're using could also have a lot to do with your problems. If you're not getting a fine enough grind, try turning the grinder over so you can re-grind everything...
