Don’t always believe a cheap controllers readings , I know some who have done tests with the exact same cheap nails and got way different readings from both. Also a coil alone can throw things off .

It is not cosmetic , it actually helps maintain the temp and keep it a bit more stable trapping the heat in around the coil. It may not make a huge a difference but it helps.
