Are you able to fire (not with actual fire just press trigger ) the mod and heat it up a bit? From the looks of it you've got some gunk built up which has created a seal...a sticky seal. If you're able to warm it up you should be able to break the seal.

*Update* The visual indicator is now stuck at shiny, but does expand and retract. The funky, intolerable taste/odor is back. 3 baths so far today and I think it's the wood itself. I'm going to leave the wood off of it overnight and see how the pieces smell in the morning. has anyone else...

I believe you can purchase a TAF bucket and cap to swap. Fairly simple. No special conversion kit needed. just the replacement parts you can order anywhere that stocks the Sai, like puffitup.
