Have you tried leaving and little space between the herb and the heater screen? You may need to bump the heat a little but it should allow the heat ring to diffuse, for lack of a better word, and reduce any hot spots. Might be worth a try? I have been using the little screen pods lately too and...

You can get vapor in 2 or 3 seconds if you bump the heat up and want to rip it like a bong. I like a 4 second draw lately but with tictac sized chunks, not ground. I don't like grinding with the VB anymore.
