Easiest and most gentle method for cleaning sapphire (or any insert really) is soaking it in room temp distilled water for a few minutes and then scrubbing it with a q-tip. Will normally strip off the gunk quite easily.

I can't detect any taste from the Ti airpath, but I have not tried an all quartz airpath for comparisons sake. My thoughts are that the insert material is going to have the greatest impact on taste; I would go for sapphire. But you could torch the Gavel, the Liger not so much. Regarding dabbing...
