I've left it on 6.5 for 2 hours before taking a 2 minute long slow drag and get no vapor. Is that expected? If I crank up to 7.5-8, I get vapor immediately, but then the top of the herb is burnt or just under the point of combustion, with poor flavor.

OK to be more specific 7 is where any light appears even in the dark, tested on multiple outlets. No visible damage. Gonna try leaving it at 7 for a while and test if it's enough to get vapor I guess

Thanks for the info, I figured as much, but I don't see any light until 7. Not getting much vapor until 8.5. Wonder if my cord isn't drawing full power or something? edit: Actually it just burned at 8, so maybe it just takes longer to heat up/adjust than I expected... will test a bit more
