I've used ceramic cups with small articulating clamps to hold the coil in place (search Amazon for 'smallrig articulating clamp'): Here's a variation using a small post hidden from view just behind the ceramic cup. The coil arm is bent at a right angle and zip-tied to the post:

It looks like algae to me - I've seen similar spots on rigs that have been shelved with water for a period of time. Heating up the rig with hot water and then using a thick slurry of alcohol and coarse salt with vigorous shaking has always worked for me.

Maybe the solution is to just have hot coils scattered around the house... :D
