I think Vitolo & GR answered well but I'd like to add that the only thing you really have to baby is the heating element itself (the white ceramic plate under the disc). If the heater is still hot, like over 180F, it shouldn't see any moisture. Definitely be careful with the hot disc falling...

Without water... You mean "with water" right... Any water droplet on the heater is instant crack. Heat it up only when all parts are dry. I don't think you need to wash the ceramic pads but you surely could- water or iso. Seems nothing gets them cleaner though than running the unit on high...
