The grinders are cleaned prior but it can't hurt! I do recommend that you do not remove the PTFE O-ring. PTFE has a very low coefficient of friction, but it's not very elastic. Taking it on and off will likely permanently deform (stretch) the O-ring.

It's definitely less durable than aluminum, but unless you plan to run it over with your car, there shouldn't be any worry of it breaking. It's quite strong actually. The semi-transparency might help determine how much is left. But you're right, no real purpose except that it looks neat! :)
