Just to add to what @rvarick said, it's pretty easy to clean and you won't clean under the screen anywhere near as often as you clean the screen. The screen pops out and is reseated relatively easily. I find ripping off most of the cotton of a q-tip gets in the smaller "tubes" quite easily and...

I didn't do it very often, but I used to give the inside of my 7 and 8 a light waxing every so often and noticed no ill effects (I did break the rail on my 7, but it was very much because of chemicals other than what was in the wax. Damn you ethanol...). I didn't put a hell of a lot in though...
