Cannabis use and cardiovascular problems

Came across this article yesterday. Seems concerning?

The operative word in that headline is "could". No experiments were done in any of these studies. It's squinting at Excel spreadsheets.

My big problem with the "cannabis causes heart disease" thing is, heart disease is so common, it seems hard to isolate one life choice and say this "caused" a heart attack/stroke.

The author of this metastudy is recommending cannabis be legal but regulated like tobacco. I'm sorry, but this is not the same thing. 80-90% of lung cancer cases are attributable to smoking. These nerds have never shown any comparable risk with cannabis.

The problem is that these "studies" have is they make no differentiation between how that Cannabis is consumed. You get the impression that they just act like everyone just smokes joints. Even when i was smoking i almost exclusively tried to smoke through water with a small bong. With DH vaporization there is even less irritation of lungs throat etc. Also what about edibles in the consumption mix?

So unless they even address these points i think there is a critical lack of science going on. Even for researchers they want to make a big SPLASH headline so they will get their next staunch of funding.. And political groups will try and use this for their own purposes.

Weird. Caffeine caused my heart to sometimes "flutter". It's been 5 months and never experienced it again. Cannabis? I'm a fucking athlete and my heart kicks ass! lol. Fuck Combustion!

Yes, there are so many variables that are not systematically addressed in these studies, such as frequency of use, amounts used, methods of ingestion, potential pesticide exposures, etc., etc., etc. Also, there are a host of issues associated with self-report data.

At best, the current meta-analytic study suggests that it is possible to use cannabis in ways that appear to be unhealthy. IMO, until better controlled, more granular studies become available, we are still essentially in the dark.

My uneducated guess is it's more likely than not that cannabis consumption can exacerbate cardiovascular issues in some people. It does temporarily increase your resting heart rate. Keep an eye on your blood pressure and heart rate as you grow older. Given that heart disease kills most Americans unless cancer gets them first, that's good advice for everyone.

I also think if you could design an A/B test where one group of regular consumers quits cannabis and the other continues toking, but quits the Standard American Diet, the latter would have fewer cardiac issues

I wouldn't be surprised if you see this particular study as a point of emphasis in political discussions in Congress in the upcoming weeks. This is exactly the type of ill formed opinion that always seems to be latched upon and used for that political ammunition.

When I see any article about a "study" related to health, I just ignore it. The periodic "red wine is good for you" headlines are just as suspect as this one.

At a high level: this is a meta study of epidemiological studies (which have limitations); and correlation is not the same as causation (and this study only found the former). See https://www.tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations

To their credit, the authors did appear to try to control for some other variables (like tobacco and other drug use), and they did suggest further studies are needed. But no media outlet is going to focus on those points - too long to write, no one will read, etc. I also believe there is no clarification of relative vs. absolute risk.

I found these quotes pretty interesting:
  • "First, no association was found between cannabis use in young adulthood and early stroke (HR: 1.59, 0.59 to 4.28) in a study among a cohort of 50 000 men included during the compulsory military service in Sweden."
  • "In a case-control study among US adults younger than 50, the odds for stroke were found to be similar in subjects ever exposed to cannabis than in those never exposed."
  • "No association was found in another cohort of US subjects included between the ages of 18 and 30 and followed up more than 25 years in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults cohort (OR=0.57, 0.17 to 1.93)."

The title of the article is clearly click batey too.

Good advice. Tafee (maker of Bowle), for example, suggest staying hydrated and vaping in moderation.

I do the same thing in the sauna because that shit makes my heart rate feel like i've ran a marathon (or at least how I think it would feel like)! :D
