Phase3 Vaporizers

I'd like to update my stance on screen position. I've used my screen in the lower position down by the handle some I got it. That's why I never had screen sliding issues. Today I moved the screen to the recommended position and it really makes a hell of a difference. At 520 my bowl was more evenly roasted. It was also tastier, and much much much faster with the extraction. I am a firm believer in the closer screen placement now. But the lower, more secure spot is nice for bigger bowls for a session or for a freshly cleaned bowl.

Figured I'd start this thread to facilitate discussion on a little something I've been working on. Many thanks to those who have already been following me along with this project, I really appreciate all the kind-hearted support, FC has always been an incredible place that many of us call home, and I couldn't think of a better spot to talk about my vaporizer designs.

I first started fiddling with this idea in 2017, after experimenting with aftermarket glass bowls for my Flowerpot, I was very intrigued with the smoother vapor from such a seemingly minor change. I wondered how the vapor would differ if the entire thing was made of glass. During this same time, the Glass Symphony was making strides here on FC, I was always impressed with Jojo's pure design, but always a little bit nervous of the form factor, unfortunately I never had a chance to try that awesome vape.

I sketched out a bunch of different concepts, attempting to condense the purity of the Glass Symphony into the size of a Flowerpot. The thing about glass is certain things that are easy to do with metal, are difficult to do with glass. One of my main problems was figuring out how to securely fasten the coil to a glass vape - the Flowerpot uses a screw and nut system to secure the coil, but to make something like that out of glass could be extremely cost prohibitive. This coil mounting issue stumped me for quite a while and I somewhat lost interest in the project for some time. In fact, after doing some beta testing for Dabpress, I pretty much lost interest in vaping flower altogether, transitioning full-time into dabbing rosin. I was greatly impressed with how affordable and commonplace it was when dabbing to have an all glass air path, for years it's pretty much been standard, and I found that smooth vapor hard to beat.

The thing about rosin is if the flower doesn't yield particularly well, you can end up vaping a weeks worth of herb in one afternoon... I knew I wasn't done with rosin, but I needed a way to vape flower again for those economic times that demand conservation! Largely inspired by the simple quartz banger, I tried to come up with a conversion kit that would work with my existing e-nail setup and turn it into a dry herb convection powerhouse. The problem with that idea is a quartz banger primarily uses conduction to vaporize oils, because of that, the airflow routing is not really optimal for convection. Inspired by Buildozer and Stu's Evo On A Stick thread, I built and posted my first sapphire powered prototype, fitted inside a simple male to male glass adapter, and heated with a 25mm barrel coil I was using for my banger. I started sketching vaporizer concepts again, wondering if there was an exsiting product I could already use for inspiration? I looked through a ton of lab glass and smoking glass apparatuses for anything promising and landed on the carbon filter adapter, a smoking accessory which uses activated carbon processed from coconut husks to filter the smoke.

The carbon filter adapter seemed like a great candidate for a heater housing, and for a while I strongly considered that as my new starting platform. The only issue with that was...

  1. How was I going to mount the coil to the heater? I knew from my experiences with quartz bangers if a coil was fitted too tight, it could crack the glass on the cool-down as the coil contracts.
  2. If a pre-existing carbon filter wasn't the perfect diameter as-is, then I'd probably have to source a custom heater. The problem with that is I knew wanted to use an existing coil to keep things simple. KISS!
I knew I wanted to do something a little different from other glass ball vapes, I had been using ruby and sapphire terp pearls in my rosin rig for a while and figured I could migrate those supercharged thermal properties over to a convection heater. Sapphire is more thermally conductive than stainless steel or titanium, and retains heat longer than glass, all while keeping that clean and pure flavor and smooth vapor. Plus with a convection vape, thermal shock issues of sapphire is pretty much a non-issue. Major win. :D

I took more inspiration from my dab rig, after a particularly inspiring dab :science: I looked over at my enail and thought "what if I had a rod attached horizontally to secure the coil, just like my enail setup." This was a major pivotal point for this design, finally I felt like I was on to something. Even more progress was made when I changed that rod to a tube, this could double as the coil arm and the air inlet - another issue I was trying to figure out. With this new design I could eliminate the old carbon filter concept entirely, saving almost an inch in height just by removing that extra glass joint which would be at the top of the carbon filter.

A few prototypes later and I've finally got something that I feel worthy of sharing, I'm still working out a few more little details and finishing touches, but I really just wanted to put myself out there (something I really struggle at) and share my work thus far.

If you've read this far I sincerely appreciate your patience and your time, thank you so much for following along!

I'd like to present a little video clip of a quick vapor session - I've since made a small modification which I believe improves performance further and I'm excited to share more about that!

I hope to post more usage videos, photos, theories, concepts, and renderings here and hope you'll follow along for the ride.

Much love, FC!

However, the coil handle I’m really looking forward to is the Phase3 coil handle! I cannot even imagine what inverted’s come up with but I’m here for it. You know it’s going to compliment the Z8 heater & bowl and I wonder what the material will be? It’s good to have important things on the horizon to look forward to!

Oh it's definitely going to be complimentary :D

I still need to order some sample handles, I haven't got any yet as I made a few little tweaks to the design that should make it more sturdy and secure.

I’ve got a confession and I hope you all won’t judge too harshly. You see, I went a bit consumer-mad for the last couple of years. Did a lot of online retail therapy for desktop synthesizer toys, vape gear and honestly, entirely too much glass for one person. So this year, I’m only buying flower & Z8 stuff and going to focus on enjoying all the cool stuff I acquired during my multi-year anxiety attack.

Still, 2023 is still gonna be ultra-mega dope for me with the bowl & coil handle coming down the road. Which is really convenient, since basically inverted’s killed any interest in another home vape, the least he could freakin’ do is make some badass accessories that I can’t live without! Just sayin’, he is directly responsible for this current state of affairs. That’s a reasonable viewpoint, right?

That’s it for tonight’s rambling, kiddies! Go Phase3 and get fucking elevated!

That's just what I love to hear!!
After all, a Z8 and a Moog would be a really sweet combo :D

Z Train is definitely steaming through hard this year!

Thanks so much for the support and encouragement!!

Excited to show off some more cool stuff this year!

That's definitely what's up, that's where I like to run mine as well, I find myself using very small amounts these days and still get a ton of milk - really appreciate your update!

Cool to see people experimenting with their Z8's!

Is this for sale? Can I order one

I'm not currently making the glass ones, I'll be getting more of the brand new SX's going shortly and Z8's should be available for preorder sometime this month.

First round of SX's should be (hopefully) going out next week, the glass has just shipped and the rubies shipped a few days ago, just waiting on delivery of those parts, then just some brief assembly, and then packaging everything up and sending it out!

Thanks to everyone rocking with me!

I'm using a dual PID from China, but the coil temp is very accurate. When I had it on the disorderly conduction controller I was around 400ish.

Here's another one of the Z 8 at 475

Always LOVE seeing the fresh content!
Seriously that stuff helps me out a ton

Not sure which thread would be best for your question (mods can move if they like) but I think that 8786D uses a 9 Pin female Jack on the hot air side and a 6 pin male on the soldering iron side.

It's 8 pin in the female jack, but i cannot find a coil with 8 pin, and it seems like is smaller than the normal 5 pin, I also thought about taking a normal coil and soldering it to an 8 pin connector, I don't know if it will working. If somebody knows more please reply

It's totally off topic here, but... I don't think the soldering iron will work with a coil. The coil itself runs off ac power and I'm not sure that's true of the soldering iron element. Also I doubt the soldering iron element is as powerful as a coil and the station is probably not man enough to run a coil even if it does run AC.

Why can't you buy an enail controller? Are they unavailable where you live? You can build one with a raspberry pi with a little knowledge and patience, although I've not tried it myself yet.

Quick update - SX's should definitely be going out next week. Beads are in, and the glass is in town, but I was out of the house when they attempted delivery yesterday so it should be here Monday.

The next round of SX's will be opening up very soon as well, probably right after this first round lands and gets into hands.

Still working on getting the next round of Z8's going - hopefully not much longer there!

Steamrolled!

Always a stellar 'Station setup when @coolbreeze stops by!

Cheers to you sir!

When will they be available?
I would even be ready to wait for these spool sleeves to be available for you to send me the SX lol.
And no problem to add the difference by PayPal 😉

Sorry I still need to order samples of them, kinda want to get these SX's mailed out first before I order any new designs though. Still running on a super tight budget for right now with everything. I definitely understand wanting to combine shipping though! Hopefully I can get some in soon to check out.

@invertedisdead I don't recall if this was ever discussed but, have you made a Z8 with zirconia balls?

Nah, but I did consider it though!
I have something better that hits on that note if I can work my way up to it.

Graveda.de just told me their €90 coil/PID kit will be available "mid-March". I am getting a coil for testing and definitely not messing with China electronics for this. You wait almost a month to get something that might not work, just to save a few bucks- not worth it.

wow thank you very much, i agree with you, but i can't find any european shop, when i search enail pid controller i only find the pid part... and I noticed that the various brands all re-render the same pid... But this german website look interesting, ty

It's already included for products shipping to EU, so should be fine.

Boro balls are also on Ali Express among other stores. Phase3 ballheads come ruby filled by the way.

Pretty sure graveda is also China electronics. Shipping isn't included in the price (not sure how much they charge as you need to go through checkout).

There's no reason the Ali express ones shouldn't work if you buy from a well reviewed source. I paid ~65 € including shipping for mine and it took maybe 2-3 weeks. It seems to work great (have only tested it, so can't speak for longevity).

that was my concern, that anyway all this stuff comes from china, so it doesn't make sense to buy in europe hoping it's better, you can never be sure unfortunately, that was my concern, that anyway all this stuff comes from china, so it doesn't make sense to buy in europe hoping it's better, you can never be sure unfortunately, The shipping costs in Italy at least, are 20 euros, Mind sending me a link of the boro balls? I just checked and could only find them listed as glass balls, so not sure if it's boro sorry. Probably best to ask the seller.

Which country in Europe does this kit come from?
It's very interesting !
I haven't purchased a PID and coil for my SX yet.

.de is for German companies! Probably made in China but I think it is their design. Graveda's device has good reputation. The 25mm coil has bottom heating as well, and most injectors have a flat top and will stand upside down and can be picked up from the bottom with a clamp ....aaaaaand inverted! as shown by Old Head recently!

Ordered my PID & 16mm coil in anticipation of the SX launch.. I'm ready, but have a quick couple questions:

1) I've never used a PID before. Are the temperatures roughly comparable to what I'd expect if I have used a temperature controller on a volcano hybrid? How hot do you typically set your coil to, I'm completely in the dark on the range expected for injectors like this.

2) Okay, basic setup / coil install / burn-off (i assume this is gonna be a Good To Do step, ordered from VGoodiez, didn't see mention of a pre-burn off) uhh yeah, I'll probably be asking for specific install help once the SX arrives, but I assume this isn't too difficult to manage with basic tools access?

Hype for the launch..! Looking forward to a whole new experience.
