Log vape history

Lost in Thought
From the archives of my brain here is what I recall...

(I believe) there was an initial 'log based' vape that was on the market before one of the most well known logs the Purple Daze took the log world by storm.
The PD was the standard (by many) to be the best in the biz.

The MyrtleZap came into the market shortly thereafter, and the HUGE difference between these two were the materials.
The PD used SS internals and stem tips while the MZ used brass. (I do know that you also had the option to have a PD kit in which you could build yourself)

From there amazing wood workers like Ed came into the picture and started offering wood stems and from there other well known brands like Underdog came into the market and carried the torch.

I personally was the proud owner of several MyrtleZaps as the PD was either on backorder or no longer being made (I cant recall) but I do know that I absolutely loved my Zap(s). Because of the exclusive use of brass in the MZ, many questioned whether it was inheirently 'safe' (and people on both sides of the discussion chimed in) in fact, one of the older 'Is Brass Safe' threads were created in the spirit of this discussion between the vape makers.

Forgive me if some of the details were hazy or some details were left out. Im sure there is much more that Im missing, but its been a while since I was super active round here :)

I'll give my rusty memory an attempt.

Around 1995-1996 the Ettera was released. AFAIK, this was the first log vape. It was discontinued in 1999.

In 2001, Rick released the Aromazap. It was a square log. Rick would later come out with the Myrtle Zap and then the CRZ (Ceramic Rock Zap). These were discontinued in 2012.

The Purple Days came out in 2008 from Tom and Pammy. It was my first log vape and I loved it to death. It was discontinued in 2011.

The Woodeez came out in 2009 made by Todd. It was somewhat panned as a PD knockoff and was discontinued in 2012.

Epic Vape (now Epickai) come out in with the EV1 / EV2 in 2011. Both of those models are no longer made, but Andy now sells the E-Nano (2012) which is still popular.

In 2011, Alan released the Toasty Top. Later that year he released the Heat Island (HI) which is still available today.

The Underdog also came out in 2011 by Dave. These remain popular and are still available today. It's my daily driver to this day.

In 2012 the Wychwood was released by a UK forum member @J.R.R. Tokin'. It was the first log made in the UK. It was discontinued shortly thereafter when Cookie (maker) suddenly went dark.

In 2016, @Ed's TnT released the WoodScents. It uses the popular Dynavap as it's stem. Ed continues to update it every year and is still available today.

I'm sure I've probably forgotten some, but that's what my stoned brain can still remember. Perhaps I'll update this post if someone points out something that I've forgotten.

Edit to add more vapes:

The CouchLog from @Beefcake@420Eng came out in 2021. Made in Germany, it uses ceramic balls as a heat exchanger.

The Cloud Connoisseur Zenith came out in May of this year by @iDRINKBLEACH. It also has balls :brow: and can run on AC power or a mod. It's a bit of a departure from traditional logs since it is an injector-style vape instead of being stem-based.

The Musa was released in 2016. Based in Germany, it uses a halogen-based heater. It also has a version that can run on a mod.

HomeGrownLogs by @RastaVapa is another UK-based design that came out in 2016. It appears to have been discontinued around 2019.

The Hot Pod was introduced from Australia by @hazy in 2012. It was made using Banksia seed pods. It appears to have been discontinued around 2016 (confirmation needed).

Amazing Stu! Since other logs mentioned had such details, want to add that Alan is still updating the HI too, there are several versions available in a wide variety of styles, plus the GTR log as well

Well I was gonna write 1000 words but here’s a nice picture instead!

Photo belongs to @Alan but I’ve got a copy saved in my vap almanac.

Just to demonstrate there’s nothing new under the sun, Tom @ PD was a huge proponent to “thermal mass” which is why you see this big fin stack/ heatsink. His vapes also took 30+ minutes to warm up.

Alan’s designs are the opposite, not at all relying on large amounts of mass, and came to temp in a respectable ~ 5-10 minutes.

And newer logs like the E-Nano XL have even brought back the preheat section.

I didn't mean for my commentary to be a definitive side-by-side checklist so I'd rather not update the comments, but you do bring up good points.

When I get a chance I'll come back add these vapes to my post.
what was the cause for loving it so much? open airflow? taste? heater that you can hold without getting burned in your hand? "autofire"?
so interesting!
I loved the small footprint, the tiny load size, solid hits and the ease of use. My only other vape at the time was the Extreme Q which was a bit more unwieldy. Having the PD by my side to sip on throughout the night was quite the new and pleasurable experience for me.

Ease of use is a really lovely characteristics of log vapes that I initially didn't appreciate. Special tip 'o the cap to the OG Underdog there with the super easy metal straw technique for microdosing. Suck the ground herb up into the metal stem directly rather than scoops or other ways of filling a stem. IME this doesn't work as well for larger diameter stems. But I am no log expert and prior designs may also have been well suited to the straw-sucking loading technique.

And not sure I'd necessarily consider the CC Zenith a log vape. More of a portable ball vape. But this may be splitting hairs.

Also, great point on lower mass --> quicker heat-up vs more thermal mass --> heavier hits (as evident in ball vapes)

Is this because it's not really built for direct draw?

Perhaps, it is an injector, doesn't come with a stem like the couch log... Also not sure if it was clear, that it can plug in to the wall, as well as be plugged in to the mod as a portable (which apparently works with Halo too) Zenith at least has the log shape!

The Ettera! Yes how could I have forgotten!!

Thanks for the refresher Stu! I knew I had some details mixed up a little.
Such a fun time to be alive and witness though! And with all of the advancements in vape tech, its nice to see others with an interest in some of the OGs in the function + form designs back then :)

Yeah, this was my general reasoning. Lack of stem and not a direct draw design. But we probably don't need to get too caught up in the gray areas here.

Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing.
Thanks for history guys. This was a fun read.

When I came on the vape scene back in 2014 I messed around with a few vapes, but didn't find bliss until my enano. Back then they still came with a lifetime warranty. I ran it 24/7 for years and it NEVER failed.

For all logs, pure design genius. A powerful heater encapsulated in beautiful wood, just add a glass bowl. So simply perfect.

which log was the first to carry the nickname 'milkshake drawing' like which one has the less opened airflow?

The WoodScents has the most restricted airflow by far.
Check the latest video of shaywhitegrow in Ws thread, a lot of vapor per time, the fact that there's less wood affect it or just shay's probably fast draws?

I've just added a few more vapes to my list above. I would appreciate any feedback in case I mis-stated anything. I also need to confirm if a couple are discontinued, so any assistance would be helpful. I decided to omit the Old City Diffusers since they never really had any meaningful number of vapes sold.

Yeah. "Milkshake thru straw kept me from trying logs sooner as I am generally an open airflow guy. But draw on original Underdog and Nano XL is just lovely for my preferences.
