GET BENT ---- A Fishing Thread

@macbill - I thought it was a flounder. I catch them all the time but I've never caught one that could catch me. That scene you described is what happens around here at the height of shrimp season. Everyone who can spell fish shows up when they notice the boats congregating at the shrimpy areas as they drive their cars past the bridges. Half of them don't even know water is wet or what sportsmanlike conduct is on the water. I've had them jump in front of me against the tide and as soon as I see how they throw the anchor I know I got to back away. I've even had them bump me when I couldn't get out of the way in time and look at me like I'm the idiot.

@FlyingLow - My Dad gave me a beautiful unused fly fishing rig that came with a rectangular wooden ornate box that contained about 20 flys and a hand-made (I think it was bamboo) rod. Forgot all about that box. Haven't seen that box in decades. I'm going to climb into the hoarder's cave better know as my attic and see if I can find it. It's gonna be all your fault if I never find my way out. Guess I better bring a vape....

The mouth of coffeepot bayou during the mullet run used to be fun .
😂
Yep - the mullet run around here can be "fun" as well. I can't eat mullet unless I smoke them though. I feel the same about bluefish ... taste like ass unless you smoke em. When the mullet are running I use a cast net to get mullet for other folks and I keep some for cut up bait.

Its getting colder, I pulled out my old waders that I got from my dad... these old neoprenes have to be 10 years old! They are remarkably well maintained and passed all water tests, but are quite uncomfortable and I cant imagine spending all day in them anymore.

So hopefully waders will be my last big purchase for a while. It seems there are only a few brands that offer the ability to order Mediums with size 13 socks, and all other brand's Medium waders come in with much smaller feet. Going to check out Orvis, they allow returns if it does not fit or wear well, and have a great warranty/repair program.

I am not going to spend the $$$, but I did find Simms offers the ability to put any sock on a Medium at the factory for an $85 upcharge.

I know some of you guys are saying some fish are garbage, but from my experience there is no trash fish, just trash cooks (good saying I heard on youtube). I kept hearing about how bluefish was a 'trash' fish but I finally caught one to keep and grilled it and liked it better than a lot of the other fish. We also grilled red snapper and had whiting. I really like whiting but I thought the blue fish was better than both. We also caught some sheepshead on the trip and I still liked the bluefish better. Another thing that I think is very important and I do for every fish I plan to keep and that is bleed them out immediately. Then usually when I cook them, I try to take off the blood line when I skin it. Not bleeding it and keeping the blood line can make the fish taste 'fishy' especially if you freeze the fish with the bloodline still on.

I am with ya token! It is all in the preparation.
I am all about catch and release these days, unless I am camping and traveling light... plenty of fish at the market to suit my tastes!

I am so stoked to be getting out again this Sunday!
Temps are dropping, water levels are returning to normal after a huge dump this week... our 2' deep waters shot up to over 7' two days ago. Today is back down to 3.5' and normalizing. Expecting some of the blow-out to have settled, and I am hoping fish will be hungry after all the weather moving through the last few days.

I have only flown real light equipment so far, but am moving up to an 8', #6 rod and am trying my hand at some larger streamers. Should make for an exciting day!

Have you guys tried walleye? I'm in south dakota n it's the best catch around. Huge tournaments where I live. Larry the cable guy was here a few months ago for one n the wife got to visit with him. I also do spear fishing. Extremely fun to sneak up on a fish and snag him.

My old college brother is a die-hard spear fisher in Osaka, he is going after giants every single week, GT, dogs, etc. A 130 lb catch is the norm for these guys (paratroopers)... I LOVE his feed!

Where do you go spearfishing? Are you spearfishing freshwater?

No walleyes in my parts, but I have been looking to get back north for some pike! I've only caught one and it was 25+ years ago.

Oh yeah we got pike here. I'm right on the Missouri river we use the currents from the dam to carry you down the river. Good for catching walleye. Ha I'd be a little scared to go after something that big. I bet his feed is pretty intense.
@FlyingLow If you ever make it to south dakota for some fishing let me know I'd imagine you would come to my area. We have a spare house right by the river that we rent out for hunting and fishing tourism. I'd give you a mighty good FC discount.

I hear ya but I've done all the above for blues and I even soaked them in milk overnight after doing the above. I appreciate the fight and size blues provide though. To each his own I guess. Another "trash" catch I run into all the time are stingrays. Wouldn't eat them on a bet but I've had folks from other countries tell me they'll take them and that they taste like scallops.

Stingrays are what they use in imitation scallops punch a bunch of holes through their fins to make it look like it also.

I hooked one of I guess about 25lb off the Skyway Pier in St Petersburg but broke off. The guy in the bait shop said they get some as big as the hood of a car, and he mentioned that people use cookie cutters to punch out ersatz "scallops" from the fin.

I'm in southern Saskatchewan and we do a lot of walleye fishing here, open water and ice fishing. I like walleye, but love eating perch, and burbot as well. I'll keep the odd pike when I want to make pickeled fish.

Yeah they get huge I saw a giant one like he was speaking of at SeaWorld, first time seeing one. I proceeded to feed it but being young and dumb I tried to cramp a shrimp in an eye thinking it was a mouth? Idk to this day why I thought that. Poor guy but any ways yeah they get huge
I enjoy perch also. I myself just had walleye chowder the other day.

I was back in a small creek off the intercoastal at high tide in my kayak. Had just stopped paddling and was breaking out my anchor pole when something bumped me directly under the kayak. Whatever it was ... it was huge! The bump was solid, lifted the kayak a bit and caused a pretty sizeable wake in front of the kayak. It surfaced about 10 feet in front of me heading back into the creek.... it was a stingray but I didn't know it at the time. It was about 6-7 feet wide and about the same in length. It was when I had just started to learn to kayak fish and I was alone. I remember thinking....I don't want to be in this spot when whatever that was decides to head back out of the creek when the tide lowers. I paddled out of there like I was late to win the lottery.

EDIT: Just remembered an important part of the story.....Some of the reason I reacted the way I did might have been because I had just gotten my first buzz of the day and got FREAKED THE FUCK OUT!

Ha!

I am have been so stoked to get back on the water this weekend (Sunday), and yesterday I busted my ass so bad, I know it is going to be a hellacious day... I ground off the tip of my big toe on concrete after falling while chasing a runaway dog, took a whole flap off my toe, about one square inch. I fucking dread bandaging this up and slamming it into waders and boots for 8+ hours.

On the way down, I blew out my knee and busted my hip.
Not to be deterred, I am still heading out early Sunday morning but am now looking at less remote waters with shorter hikes in.

Hope everyone gets bent this weekend!

I’m a huge pike fisherman, walleye and crappie as well. Musky when I have the time. My favorite fishing is kayak fishing in secluded lakes or mine pits. Also spear pike and ice fish. The lake by my house is now frozen. Just gunna let it thicken you before I go out. Caught my PB bass this year, but @Ed's TnT wont count it because I didn’t bring a scale!

I tried ice fishing for the first time 2-3 winters ago - I had so much fucking fun. I cant wait to do it again, hopefully this year!

Never had the oppurtunity to fly fish.

Haven't lake/pond fished since I was a kid. Surf cast occasionally on vacation or whatever, same with deep sea charters...

I do really enjoy fishing, but more so for the company and having good times with friends.

Bowhunting is more my thing

I did it! I FINALLY bent a fly rod!

It only took me 4 days, but I finally caught my first trout without a guide. A beauty of a rainbow, about forearm size (12-15").

Will post pics and story later. I feel I am finally picking up on how to read water, what features to fish for, and I am getting much sharper with fly selection. It's all coming together and I was getting strikes throughout the day.
