Vapes and GERD/Acid Reflux

I did not mean to imply that simply switching to vapes would stop reflux; a change in lifestyle/diet is also crucial, sometimes :2c:along with meds. I was only commenting on the coughing aspect. The carcinogens that you are inhaling by combusting your herb make you cough even more. Seemed like a good idea to vape instead for that reason alone.:2c:

Yes the change in life style is of great importance in that matter.

Meanwhile, if you want to continue to eat junks but want the acid reflux to stop you can try that:

Uncaria tomentosa 70 grams Ratanhia 20g
Fucus crispus 50 g Licorice 20g
Caroube 30g Agar agar 10g

Make a mix with everything.

Those 200g should last like one month, on a daily basis.

I think you should be able to find that in any herbalist's store.

How to use it:

twice a day
Morning and night after diner/breakfast

take a fullspoon of the mix, put in cold water (enough for one bowl), when it's boiling, let it boil for 5 min.
Stop the boiling.
Let it rest for 10 min.

Drink !
:D

Add sugar or prefer honey if you want, coz it takes a while to get use to the favor.

The only cons is that when the mixture cool down and after a few hours it hardens a bit, jelly style.
So you have to heat it.

The END.

For info.
I never had acid reflux on a daily basis, but like once a week, or more depending on my diet.
For me it worked as a charm, I discovered that a month ago.
Since then no acid, only when I stopped, after a big week did the reflux came back.

So I did one bowl (one fullspoon) to get back in "shape"

And since the past 3 days I am doing a test, I only add a little of the mix in a 10min infusion that I take on a daily basis, and it seems to be enough to maintain a balance.

Back on this topic, for a small update.

Haven't had any acid reflux since I m using the recipe I posted above.
Now I drink one or two cup week when I feel I need some, and that's about it.

I've had really bad acid reflux for last five years. If I miss a day of prilosec I have bad acid in the afternoon, and even with prescriptions it is barely bearable... But when I've vaped in the last 24 hours, I've noticed no gerd pain except if I have alcohol, that can sometimes still get me going. I'm not sure if it's placebo of starting herb recently, but my stomach has been a lot happier with me for the last 4 weeks.

One time I did vape and still had some pain, but I was ONLY in low temps i think for the whole time, but was a new strain too maybe wasn't used to it yet

I can offer an explanation based on medical research, confirmed by my personal experience.

First, a quick caveat: What I am referring to is genuine acid reflux disease, a physiological problem. The vast majority of those with acid reflux symptoms such as severe heartburn, have such due to dietary and lifestyle issues. So I'm presuming here that this is not you.

For a substantial majority of those with genuine reflux disease, research has shown that the source of the problem is with the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) either experiencing a much higher than normal number of "transient relaxations" and/or "weak tone" in the LES. Relaxations are what happen when you swallow, the LES opens to allow food to pass into the stomach. Everyone experiences occasional relaxations, e.g., when you burp and other times they are mostly imperceptible. But when relaxations happen much more frequently, acid can escape into the esophagus. Most problematic relaxations occurs within 2 hours of eating, but for some they mostly occur at night after retiring between 10pm-4am when the body renews its store of basal stomach acid. The other cause, weak tone, means that the LES does not maintain sufficient back-pressure into the fundus, allowing acid to be pushed up.

Sometimes the LES problem is mechanical, e.g., for those who have a hiatus hernia. But apparently the problem is most often neurological. It appears that the LES responds to impulses from the vagus nerve. There is debate over the fundamental cause for the vagus/LES malfunction. Whatever the reason, it appears that in the brain the vagus is tied to GABA, specifically the GABA-1 receptor. What the hell does any of this have to do with herb?

It has been found that certain chemicals are GABA-1 agonists and therefore influence the receptors which in turn influence the vagus. One example is the pharmaceutical Baclofen which is prescribed to control spasms caused by Muscular Dystrophy; it has been shown in multiple studies to reduce TLESR's while increasing LES pressure. Unfortunately, it also has a rather high side-effect profile, so very few gastroenterologists will prescribe it. Another GABA-1 agonist is . . . THC. There is on-going research into isolating a GABA-1 agonist without unacceptable side-effects, and a THC derivative is in this mix.

In the meantime . . . vaporizing herb reduces TLESR's and improves LES tone. If you reflux primarily following meals, vape a ~half-hour before eating. If you are primarily a night refluxer, vape before retiring. Keep in mind that the THC is only mitigating an underlying problem, analogous to how the Prilosec's acid suppression only mitigates the problem. Some and even all of the dietary and lifestyle adjustments may still be required because both the GABA-1 and acid suppression treatments are not 100% effective. You've experienced this in that alcohol overcomes the benefit of the Prilosec and the THC - the specific reason is that alcohol relaxes the LES (as does caffeine, btw - both very bad for reflux disease).

Personally, I have both the TLESR and tone issues. Whenever I vape before eating, these problems are quite noticeably improved. I have even taken to occasionally drinking an ABV smoothie ~90 mintues (to allow for digestion) before eating, which provides the same benefit (and puts my ABV to excellent use, too). Unfortunately, I have to limit this to my evening meal. But again, I can confirm the research results - THC does substantially improve LES function. While of course I can't say for sure, there is a distinct possibility that that is what you have experienced.

I'd like to see your recipe also. I've had to take a lot of medicine for different stuff over the years. The more stuff I take the more GERD problems I have. Nexium, prilosec none seem to really be addressing the problem. And they interfere with my heart meds (but doc had me on it anyway since there was nothing else).
I started taking digestive enzymes. Just plant basis digestive enzymes. I have to take one pretty much when ever I eat but I feel better and it prevents not covers up.
I drink a lot of green tea (brew your own its cheap). I always grate about 1/2 tsp to a 1/2 gal pot. I drink warm teas with Chamomile and ginger may be a little licorice root. I add a little hibiscus flower for blood pressure also. Most health food stores have knowledgeable people who came help. If you find somewhere that has bulk teas you can usually buy it cheaper and mix what makes you happy.
I get an IV med that makes me quite sick some times. I take phenegran and some other stuff on those days. I try to take as much natural stuff as I can.

Green tea? What kind? Most green teas have a lot of fluoride! SO be sure to get an organic and high quality tea whether green or otherwise, and of course use a pure and clean water source also free of fluoride and contaminants, preferably getting an extensive drinking water filter for your home. Diet has SO much to with it. And careful eating so many pills, the drugs themselves as well as the additives really can screw up your body especially their transport vessel which is basically your stomach since you do eat them.

Good post oldie^

I have had this GERD problem for a few years now and it gets pretty bad, stopping smoking my herb helped, stopping certain foods and products helped.... [but still suffer] P.s: do not underestimate the power of herbs and spices, and careful what you eat because like I and others have said that has too much to do with it and without a good diet non one can be healthy, just as if everything about your diet and lifestyle is perfect BUT you dont sleep well, you still can not be healthy without everything falling into place.

Im currently giving homeopathic medicine a go since i dont have much to lose with it. bombs away!

Thanks a lot for the recipe! I have recently been diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus and I was looking for some herbs to help me with it.
I also vaping juice without nicotine and I've read somewhere that it's ok to vape herbs.
I'll try your recipe and I let you know if I get better :)

Any idea if you can also cook some herbs or something?

I would imagine switching to vaping instead of smoking would help acid reflux but not cure it. I was using over the counter remedies for acid reflux such as Pepcid. Then recently been hearing some negative side effects that could include strokes and heart problems.

Again the docs have been prescribing something that we find out hurts our health.

I was reading that a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar helps with acid reflux. Do this before the acid reflux starts. I don't mind the taste and it really works. Drink a cup of water too. The apple cider vinegar is suppose to help other things like blood sugar levels and cholesterol.

I haven't had to use Pepcid for a month. This might not help everyone but give it a try if you don't mind the taste.

CBD strains, vapor, edibles and a low-glycemic diet work wonders on acid reflux and gerd. For me it's citric acid, so I try and watch out for it whenever I can.

I have a hiatal hernia that causes acid reflux for me, my gastroenterologist said it was caused from smoking. I take omeprazole (generic antacid of prilosec) every day to manage it. It was a long time ago so I'm not sure about smoking making that flare up less or more though, but according to my dr smoking definitely gave me a lifelong cause/agitator of it.

(as does caffeine, btw - both very bad for reflux disease)

'omg' was my reaction to this one, are you sure about this? I'm going to google it to see what I can find.

GERD runs in my family in varying degrees. I'm not able ever lie on my right side without almost immediate burning and strong nausea. I'm not able to lie flat and have to prop up on several pillows to try to recline and sleep. I take prilosec morning and night most days to keep going.

Due to diabetes and other health issues I have almost daily migraines. Loss of vision, vomiting, vertigo etc, real nasty migraines --all the time--. The ONLY thing that works for me is Excedrin. Frequently I have to take double what the bottle says is safe to take in a given 24 hour period. (note: there is one type of pharma the dr prescribed that does help but the nausea is SO bad, it's just as debilitating as the horrible migraine)

The idea that my excedrin intake could be making the already awful GERD significantly worse, omg...

The excedrin already goofs up enough other things. Combining the caffeine with PTSD and anxiety issues means that without herb I go up to 3 days at a time without being able to sleep about every other month or so.

If caffeine is also making the GERD worse... this is ominous news.

BTW to anyone else with severe sleep deprivation issues; when I finally went to see the dr and told her about the sleeping issues, she said she wanted me to come in to see her or the ER if I ever hit the two day mark again. So if you also are going more than 2 days without sleep with any frequency, make sure to mention it to or go see your doc ok?

[edited after googling]
I found an interesting link for diet and gerd info: http://www.healthline.com/health/gerd/coffee-tea#FoodandGERD1
On one hand they state caffeine is considered a trigger then state that there are no studies which conclusively prove it. It doesn't seem like it would be hard to prove whether caffeine relaxes the LES or not, does it?
Had to add another link with surprise info about canned foods and GERD: http://www.dummies.com/food-drink/s...t/the-corrosive-cs-acid-reflux-trigger-foods/

Hi There !

Long time no post (and this one is my 808th post, means a lot for a guy who lived in HI ;) ), but as I was re reading this thread I wanted to report that seven years after I still have no acid reflux anymore thanks to this fabulous recipe.

Today I stopped the milk because milk is bad for our health anyway but still going strong on coffee, OJ and stuffs and I have no acid reflux.

I would strongly recommend it to anyone, the remedy is so cheap and efficient.
A lot of my friend tried it and had some positive and better results than with regular pills.

So I've been dealing with some digestive issues myself... I ran into issues in Feb-April of 2016, again for a few weeks in November of 2016, and now recently again. (I've posted about all of this under the CHS thread and the "cannabis effects on the brain" thread, before finding this thread.) I won't repeat my whole story, but I just wanted to add to this to see if any of you have experience something similar to my situation:

Basically I am (or was because now I'm taking a break) a long time user, vaping and rarely combusting, daily, but between .025g-.05g a night. I use the underdong NONG for reference. Maybe two a night. Recently though, every time I vape, within an hour I get awful stomach pains, bloating, and feel like my digestive track just freezes. I usually wake up the next day with what I assume are GERD symptoms... nausea, and pain/pressure at my sternum. I've been eating super clean/healthy, but I've noticed my diet has little effect. If I eat clean, or if I eat garbage, or coffee/no coffee... it really doesn't matter, but if I vape, I have issues. I've never vomited. Pepto and some ginger do help quite a bit. Some nights it got so bad where I couldn't sleep, but if I took pepto b. and ginger I'd be able to fall asleep.

Anyone experience this? Have you taken a break and been able to come back? I know the brain and gut are connected, and sometimes I wonder if it's just stress/in my head (although nothing in my life is really any different then when I wasn't experience this??)

I take omega 3, magnesium, Vit B and a few other supplements. I try to exercise a few times a week and am somewhat skinny. Other than the cannabis, my only other bad habit is craft beer, but the few days I went without I noticed my symptoms did not change whatsoever. I've tried cutting out coffee too, and that had no effect.

Edited to add: Just to clarify, 4-5 days after consuming, almost all problems go away, and I'm fine. However, if I partake again, I'm back to stomach pains within an hour, and issues that last up to 8 hours after...

This is an important distinction, folks need to remember that fleeting incidental reflux because you ate too much or ate too soon before going to bed etc are not the same as chronic illnesses that cause ongoing reflux. The complications of chronic reflux can be fatal. If any of you experience ongoing reflux without obvious dietary causes like the above, please, seek a proper medical doctor first. I hope that all of you guys with chronic reflux conditions can find some relief with cannabis!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I used to take prilosec for managing GERD and it worked well. But the OTC version doesn't work at all and I can't get the prescription version. So I'm on protonix which is worthless. I have it 24/7 and it's getting worse so I'm trying to find options to reduce the pain. So far I'm checking out bananas, fennel tea and ginger. And popcorn. I went to a movie tonight and checked online to see what I could eat since I knew pizza would make it hard to focus on the movie. I read that popcorn would be ok and it actually reduced the pain. There are some suggestions here I want to try as well.
I worry about getting Barretts that some of you have mentioned- it is precancerous and I'm on meds that suppress my immune system.
So thanks. And I'm off to vape before sleep.

My MMJ doctor suggested tumeric and CBD for GERD to help with the inflammation side. I've been taking CBD+THC for quite a while to help with GERD, however I still take OTC prilosec. I'm down to maybe once a week and it seems to happen on days I am consuming more acidic foods and drinks (tomato sauce, lemonade, ketchup, etc). I avoid trigger foods/drinks whenever possible as the pain and discomfort can be overwhelming. I need to try tumeric myself, but figured I would throw out that suggestion.

Also, as @herbivore21 mentioned, I'd suggest consulting a doctor first.

I'm kind of addicted to soda made with turmeric vinegar. I'm not sure that helps much since I use carbonated water. and the turmeric soda has sugar. But, when I remember to take my "vitamins" I take curcumin which is an extract made from turmeric that is supposed to be a bit stronger.

I'm having trouble giving up my daily coffee so I'm hoping to manage this without giving that up. And tomatoes. And chocolate. Anything else I can

Are those using CBD vaping or using it some other way.
