Why Legalization Isn't Happening Anytime Soon In Illinois

Illinois Senate Bill 753 would allow adults over 21 to possess up to 30g and to grow up to 5 plants. Unfortunately, this isn't going to happen any time soon. One of the major obstacles is that Illinois, unlike the 4 states that have legalized, has no voter initiative process to put issues on the ballot at election time. In Illinois, everything must go through the state legislature and then be signed by the Governor. As some of you know, an MMJ bill took quite a few tries before it finally passed through the Illinois House and Senate. Fortunately, the Governor at the time, Pat Quinn(D), was sympathetic and signed the bill into law. There was also a decriminalization bill floating around and Quinn indicated be would probably sign it. Then the 2014 elections happened...

Former Governor Pat Quinn (D) was defeated by Bruce Rauner (R). Rauner has said that had he been Governor at the time, he wouldn't have signed the MMJ bill into law. He's also against both decriminalization and legalization. The Illinois House and Senate, which took 4 ? attempts to pass the MMJ law is now even more conservative after the 2014 elections. Without a voter initiative process to put issues on the ballot for VOTERS to decide, legalization and decriminalization aren't going to happen for a LONG time in Illinois.:bang:
