Ive tried grinding my herb to an almost powder fine grind(Mflb finishing grinder). Although I find i can achieve darker levels of abv the airflow seems to be more restricted and makes for some labored sessions. When I first started using my UD i would pack the herb down tighly in the stem. Now I just pack it lightly. Is this the preffered method?
I notice if i leave the stem on the heater port through the whole sesh it makes for denser clouds..
Also cleaning the glass stem is a breaze with some iso and cotton. Im loving the reclaim...I cant collect it fast enough

Re: Grinding - I use a coffee grinder but get it to juuuuust finer than my little handheld twister. Think like BB size chunks. If you're looking for darker, slide your screen up (the glass is also adjustable, you can raise it to back the screen, or just bump it up in the silicone). Depending on what stem I'm using, I can get anywhere from almost black ABV to light brown with some yellow spots for filler in cooking.

Edit: Curve the screen dome side toward the heater for better airflow and more even ABV. I only stir once or twice a bowl, and that's just out of habit now, or when there's kief in it. The shape helps the air spread across vs. getting pulled through the center in the "U" shape.

Edit II: Managed to somehow combust through my UD tonight. This pup gets HOT. This was a first to me, and I attribute it to the new pickups hash. I may need a VV just to dial this pup down

Hey UDs! Just wanted to say how much you guys rock! You make bookkeeping fun - I love reading all the comments you guys write on your orders. I just keep thinking, I've never worked in another business where the customers write awesome comments just for the fun of it with their orders.
Seriously though - you guys make this job awesome!

Dave, I've been reading page after page of this lengthy thread but I can't seem to find an answer.

Will the skinny ash twig (http://www.underdogvapes.com/index.php/vaporizers/vapes-all/skinny-ash-twig-13937/) have any trouble being left on 24/7? The wood looks a lot thinner than other models and you seemed wary about any model being left on 24/7.

Thank you, I'm very close to buying one of these for myself and I'm very excited

My UD arrived today. It's so beautiful!
Only thing is, I don't know how to use it. LOL <---newbie

Where does the plant material go? I checked out a couple of Youtube reviews, but they didn't go over that part. Is there an illustrated step by step somewhere?

Thanks!

Catherine

Your stems should come with a screen in them already. Just inhale through the side farthest from the mesh inside and it gets trapped, like you're using a straw. Aim for ~1/2 a pencil eraser, don't tamp and just see what happens. You'll figure out packing differently can effect temps/hits, but it's a good place to start, no risk of getting too hot blocking the path.

Make sure you let it get warm enough :), have fun.

I had to insert the screens into my silicone stems when I first used it. After that, yeah, get the material into the "short end" so it's trapped by the screen. Then I make sure to keep the "short end" pointing generally upward and bring the UD over to meet up with the "short end" of the stem and then inhale. :)

A little more to it if you're using any kind of water filtration.

So, the plant material goes directly on top of the heat element, then the stem goes on top of that .. I can smell it, but no smoke when I hit it.

Update: We have smoke! Now I just have to figure out how to use all these accessories that came with it.

No, you don't want plant material actually hitting the heating element, I don't think. That's why you have to hold the stem at an angle if your buds aren't sticky enough. I always make sure to have a decent amount of space between my material and the element.

Then I'm confused again. What keeps the plant material from falling onto the heating element, if there's no screen between them?

I think some people do put two screens in to keep the herb from falling. I simply always use my stem/UD at an angle so that the material won't fall anywhere and only use the one screen.

I should add that I disengage the stem after inhaling! And therefore keep the UD right side up after inhaling. Just to be clear.

Catherine, 'suck' the flowers into the stem like a straw. It generally stays in place through friction (the silicone has a little 'tac' to it that helps), and like EDA said I usually don't use it straight up and down. Sideways for direct draws through it, and it's almost upside down when through the water pipe. It won't hurt anything if the heater port is touching the herb a little, but it will increase your temps. For cooler hits just don't seal the stem as well and let some air slide in.

i think this video by another user here, Vitolo, should help.

although in the video he uses an Aromazap, it basically goes the same for Underdog stems as well. suck up the material through the stem, pack lightly if necessary (but half the time the material sticks in the bowl on its own), and take a hit as if you were holding the stem from your mouth like a cigarette and bring the UD to mate to the end of the stem. this way the stem should be horizontal to the ground and no material will fall into the heat port.

Wow some gorgeous dogs up on the site with some nice pedigrees  I love the Indian rosewood, madrone, and spalteds. The skinny twigs how would one of those keep up with back to back to hits for a quick heavy session?

The skinny Twigs will keep up pretty much just as well as any other piece, most people won't be able to notice any appreciable drop in temp between hits. :2c:

Hey Catherine did you get a "getting started" card in the box with your Pup? Those usually ship with domestic orders and have a packing list on one side and some basic instructions on the other side. Real simply though you just suck up some material with the stem (like it's a straw) with the material sucking up into the end closest to the screen, a layer 1/8" to 1/4" thick is probably a good amount. Then just hold the stem and Dog horizontal (not necessary but less messy) and carefully connect the stem to the center tube on the Dog.. then inhale slow, steady and deep. Repeat as needed. Results should follow. :brow:

Sorry for the confusion SoccerGuy, all the pieces can be left on 24/7 now days if that's how you want to use it. Initially, way back in the old days, the pieces were not meant to be used that way but it no longer applies. The thinner wood pieces will feel more hot to the touch but other than that it's all good. :peace:

Hey everyone:

Has anyone with multiple dogs noticed a drastic difference in temperature between two different models?

The ash twig I purchased has been putting out far more satisfying clouds than the Quina twig using the same stock power supply. No matter how I arrange the variables, the ash twig always takes the abv to a more satisfying color.

For those of you posting these temping milk-shots, are you ALL using a VVPS, or am I still not getting the hang of this?

Great Scott!
Gotta get me some new Underdog supplies like stems etc soon. I've been out of this thread for a long time. My core loosened up a bit finally. Gotta send it to Dave soon. Been meaning to for months. The thing still works perfectly though, so the incentive inst there as much ;)

WONGS FTW! I need to get one of those for myself.

How's everyone been doing?

I have been using this one everyday for over a year.

I think a few other members use it as well. It has worked flawlessly since day one. I also have the one that Alan sells and that works great for my HI but is a little underpowered for most of my UD's

I've been using this since the very early days of Underdog here at FC. Love it.

I just ordered that one. There's the same one on Amazon for 39.99...10 dollars less. I think the company was called Bodyarte ?

Could anyone tell me how long it takes for the UD to go from say 12V to 13V?

Hey ioright,

I have noticed exactly this and it is why I am a big fan of using a VVPS to fine tune a dog to work like I prefer. For example, my Ash log with the non-insulated 24/7 core runs at my preference at 12.9 volts. My Bocote twig needs 13.8-14 volts for the same performance. I think there a lot of variables in the dogs that can easily be fine tuned with a $40.00 (delivered!) VVPS.

The dog WILL fog

Got my Twig and I have been enjoying its low herb appetite. Started with the glass stem and have since moved on to the silicone tube which is actually better. I want to try a vvps, you can also let a Underdog heat up for 10 minutes from cold and get some of the lower effects and taste of the herb. Usually with the glass stem I get a less even yellowing/browning; which is probably my technique?

One thing I noticed about voltage and power is that a lot of plugs are on one breaker. I thought I had my dog on its own breaker but my roommates cloud was actually stealing power from it. Had to change spots and everything is back to normal. I'm just saying you gotta try different plugs and give them each a good test. Side note, my ash runs very hot compared to other dogs I've tried.

Happy new year to all.. Was about to do some window shopping but noticed the Ud website is down. Should we be expecting some new surprises from Ud research and development? That would be awesome..
