Cell phones and loss of proper etiquette

There was a post about watches that got me thinking of the loss of etiquette due to cell phone usage...

Why,..

Why does the live person have to wait quietly while the person on the cell phone loudly finishes their call?

It is not ok to take a phone-call while in the middle of a actual live face to face conversation with someone.
It is not ok to text during meals.
It is not ok stare at your phone instead of the person in front of you.



These are just a couple,.. feel free to answer these or add your own etiquette breakers

Or being at a function (concert, restaurant, daughter's recital, lecture etc.) and having your phone go off. Loud. Playing some insipid song that you thought was the shit.

Or shopping while talking on the phone. Especially the hands free ones. I can't tell you how many times I've thought they were talking to me.

My absolute pet peeve is those who stand at a checkout and ignore the cashier tending to them while they continue their oh so important conversation.

I find that so damn rude that some folks don't appreciate someone enough to look at them, thank them....wish them a good day, whatever but the dismissive wave or nod while on the phone really chaps my ass!

I have a couple tenants that cashier and have seen it happen in front of me. Asked later privately how it made them feel both replied it sucks.

Sorry Lo,.. I had put it up already,.. before I read your post in the Watch thread,... but it really is an issue nowadays,... used to mean if you were on the phone you had something important going on,... now it seems like a person is on the phone despite important things going on.

One of my big ones is a cell phone on the table,... it is like,.. I am only spending this time with you till something better comes along!!! Grrrrrrrr

I have a habit of when i get to work putting my cell phone right next to the land line and leaving it there the duration of the day.
I hate talking on the phone, always have, so I despise my cell phone, yet I see it as a necessary evil when it comes to business.
One of my biggest pet peeves concerning cell phone use are people who talk and drive or even worse text and drive. I don't even like it when people call me when I am driving. I turn it to silent when I hop in the car... whoever it is can leave a message and I will get to them when I am not occupied.

What I also don't get is people who call and leave a message pretty much asking me why do I have a cell phone if I am not going to answer it? Not even taking into account that maybe I am busy and cannot answer the phone... that one really gets me

Before I became ill I only used a cell phone for business. Today I do not use them but my wife has one. I just dont really like people that much to be at peoples beck and call. If someone calls me and they are on the road and its not an emergency, it never is, I tell them to call me back when they where they are going so its not a distraction, also its illegal to drive and talk in many areas where we live now. Normally someone will only call me from the road once after I do this.

I did take my grandson to see Sherlock Holmes when it came out and someones phone went off but that person quickly quieted it/shut it off.

In my youth I might of made it an issue if I thought someone was being rude and it was affecting me but today I care less and am more Buddha than jackass and would more than likely just point out to my grandson or my nephews how inappropriate the action is and why you should not do that. I did that with someone or something at an amusement park and that corrected the issue. I also look like someone people would not want to mess with so that goes a long way to but a kid could probably beat my frail butt today hehe.

So neither of my sons have a DVR and they ask me to record stuff for them all the time, so I do. Then either one or both will come over, will make some hot chocolate or popcorn or other goodies, bring 'em out onto the coffee and settle back to watch the movie that I recorded...........for them, and ten minutes into the movie, I see the glow from one of their phones and their texting their friends. That's when I hit the pause button and they go, "No no. Don't pause. Go ahead. I'll be off in a minute", and I'm like, WTF ??!! lol

You know it's bad when you see signs in the Post Office, telling people to get off their cell phones if they want service.

Even with land lines, it's been a pet peeve of mine for years that you can be doing business with somone in a store, or waiting to do so, and yet anyone calling on the phone gets priority. The proper etiquette is to answer the phone and ask if the person can hold (and fuck 'em if they can't), while the employee addresses the person who's actually there, face to face.

Not to mention texting while driving....

This isn't poor etiquette, it's insanity. Even people who swear they can do this successfully admit, after taking a road test with traffic cones, that they were wrong. This practice is now illegal in my state, and that should be the case everywhere IMO.

The texting while driving I agree is insane!! I read that a car travels on average 60' per second so 2 seconds without looking at road you've gone 120' (on average). Can't imagine living with running someone over or causing an accident or even hitting an animal cuz I was texting while driving. Nope, not going to happen here and I wish they would make that illegal everywhere

I remember reading something on CNN discussing that your more likely to get into an accident texting than you are while drunk driving... kinda scary

Ya know what's odd. I've been with friends in a restaurant, and someone sitting at the next table or booth over is talking on a phone, and one of my friends would just shake their head and say, "How rude". I never could understand that. What in the hell is the difference if one is carrying on a conversation with someone else sitting across from them at the table, or carrying on a conversation with someone on the phone. Either way, they're still talking and if you didn't turn around to look, you would never know that they're on the phone.

HAHHAH I can't say it is a pet peeve of mine but if I was the receiver of the call I would be a bit offended.

guilty fact,... I do like to use my iPhone while I am in the toilet,.. sometimes I forget to bring a book.....but I don't make calls while in there.

I avoided it as long as I could,.. then I had to join the iPhone cult,.. I didn't want to but it was needed for all the travel I do and it weighs a lot less than my laptop..

Thats definitely it. Every time a customer calls me at work from a cell phone they're talking louder than they need to. They think that because they may be having trouble hearing you that they need to yell for you to hear them. Annoying to the person they're talking to as well as those around them.

I can honestly say, after almost 2 years of not owning a cell phone, I"m much happier. Cell phones make me more reachable than i ever want to be. I realized that, after owning a cellphone for a few years and usually keeping it switched off and just using it to check voicemail and such, that i was just flushing ~$60 down the drain every month for something i dont need.

Not to mention not having to worry about those tales of harmful radiation.

I have a pay-as-you-go phone. It keeps me from using it carelessly. I use it for texting (not while driving of course) and for phone calls under 5 minutes. I am rarely on it, and 300 minutes lasts me about 2 months, or so. So no time to be rude, lol.
And yes, cell phones turn average people with manners, into careless pricks that are just about me, me, me. I also can't stand when people are on their phone when at a cashier. Sooo rude. And I also hate it when I am talking to someone, and out of the blue, they just start texting someone, or answering a text. Whatever. I guess I'm not that important....

I hate when ppl have their phones on vibrate and they get a call and you're not lookin at them so you dont know and you only hear them say "hey, whats goin on man!" and then you're all like "Uh, not much, as you can see, why?" and then look at them and feel stupid. Us youngsters are great at multi-tasking you see! And can text a lot quicker than you fogies so we don't miss the film. Haha j/k. Agree this is very rude especially in a public cinema, but can understand it a little more if it's at home...

Also, coming from a country where it's been illegal for many years now to even think about using your phone while driving, I'm genuinely quite shocked to learn that it's not the same in America. Like you guys don't have enough problems with drink-driving to add phones into the mix!

Wholeheartedly agree with the general lack of phone-etiquette. Blackberrys (Crackberrys) piss me off a lot, people who have them literally never let the things out of the grasp!
