I use a stiff, slightly downward arched screen to push the material down/fill up some space. But I think I'm mostly filling my bowl completely.. haven't 'packed' it tight ever tho. Haven't even weighed how many grams approximately fit in the bowl.. I'm curious what kind of tool you're using...

For me puffing on the Mighty is more for the taste. But long 'lung' draws get you high faster.. + with the Mighty even then the taste is good too. I don't puff cause I don't want to waste any vapor.

My unit also fluctuates by 1-3 degrees Celsius which is about 2-5 Fahrenheit? I think fluctuation is normal and should be expected. And maybe outside influence has an affect on the fluctuation as well.. such as temperature, wind, humidity etc?
