Thanks for the tips! I took the rubber sleeve (insulator?) off because I thought it was strictly to prevent damage when shipping. It's still sitting on my table so I can do your trick. I was just worried about having that rubber?/silicone? sleeve so close to the heater but I might try it.

All the way down (right as you hear the "click") the arrow is pointing right at "11" instead of "0", but that's cool. Now that I know I can remove and replace the dial it's no problem. Thanks to both of you for the screen adjustment suggestions!
