Boating and summer mishap

We had a scary moment this week-end, and I would like to share it with you. We were canoeing but the place was busy, lots of motor boats with a few careless drivers among them. After fighting their waves and the current for an hour, we reached what seemed like a safe area. We were relieved to finally be allowed a break. I pulled a pre-rolled joint from its container, and before I could even reach in my pocket for some fire, we got struck from behind with a big wave that instantly filled and flipped our canoe, courtesy of some dude and his wake board rig.

First lesson I want to share, canoeing is very dangerous when surrounded with careless wake board and water skying boats.

Second lesson, get your puppy a life vest. What ended as a bad day could have been a tragedy (for us at least). We bought one the following day, and our dog instantly got used to it and became a much better swimmer.

Stay safe on the water, friends, because in my recent experience fighting waves while struggling to throw your dog on the top of a flipped canoe is no fun.

Oh and BTW, my precious Air was in the car, along with our phones. I lost 5 joints in a glass container, a lighter, and the will to paddle. Everything else is sound.

Thanks for reading. I don't know what helped the most, relating this experience here, or hitting my EQ with every bit of lung power I had, but I'm feeling much better now. :-)

You probably picked the worst weekend of the year to go out paddling.... We avoided the lake this year because of all the 'yahoos' that come out this particular weekend. Too many people out there that haven't had any boating safety and have no clue what the 100 ft. wake rule is.

I'm so glad your experience didn't turn into a tragedy.

I know, right? We're in Canada, so the 4th of July is like a cousin's birthday, but I still heard more fireworks than on July 1st (Canada Day). One of these drivers came to our rescue, and he denied firmly any responsibility in the safety of the paddling embacartions on the river, he had absolutely no clue of any law regarding safety. All he could say sounded like "when you're hauling a wake board, you don't wanna slow down, man!". They can go crazy all they want on the bigger river downstream, they don't have to ride the smaller one up, but they still do.

I'm glad everyone is safe too, thanks!

You own a pug. They don't swim. I'm in the same boat. My Frenchie cannot swim. It's that type of dog trait. Always have them in a life vest. If it was a Labrador or something I would be less worried.

You are right, these dogs are not good swimmers, and Labs are wonderful at that. With the vest it's like another dog, he floats and swims happily. When the canoe flipped he was trapped underneath, so we followed his line, found him, and got him on top of the canoe. He looked very amused at all that.

I'd love to see your dog if you want to post a pic here or on the animals thread.

Omg... it didn't even happen to me and my eye just twitched.... :argh:

Typical. Has no idea that you had 'right of way.' And he's lucky something didn't happen to the person on the wake board...

Imo, speed boats shouldn't be allowed on smaller areas of a river; just like they're not allowed on small lakes.

Not one of his best photos.

He's gorgeous! I might be getting a second pug or a french bulldog, someday.

@momofthegoons Other places I went that rented kayaks and canoes, they woud just drive you up the river 10, 20 or even 50 miles. No chance of crossing a speedboat there. This place is different, you start from the bottom and paddle your way up. :hmm::lol:
