Fire Spinning!

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. DO NOT LIGHT RANDOM THINGS ON FIRE. DO NOT DO THIS!

A lot of the pictures are cut off, view them separately to really get a good look!

Some of you probably have no idea what in the world fire spinning is. Well, it's exactly what it sounds like, it's taking something thats on fire and swinging it around! There are a lot of different toys which include: Rope Dart(what I spin) which is a long rope with a head on the end, Poi which are 2 much smaller lengths of rope with heads on both ends that you swing together, Staff which is exactly what it sounds like(a staff with wicks on the end) and a bunch of others. The things that are lit on fire are kevlar and fiberglass ribbon or rope thats tied into a knot. The type of knot that my fire head is is called a cathedral:

You soak it in white gas and then light it on fire! Last night I had the opportunity of getting a lot of pictures taken and a video. Hope you guys enjoy!

Here's the video. It wasn't a very great burn as you can't see what I'm doing with the rope itself but still quite a good video!

A less dangerous way to do this is if you can find big sparklers. May not be as bright/cool but the pics come out the same.

That is pretty cool. How long did you set the exposure time on the camera go get some of those trails?

I used to do similar experiments like this with old 35mm cameras and flashlights (as a kid) you can get some really trippy shit with a long exposure time and a cool light source.

Although I think playing with fire like that would be a wee bit more exciting than using a flashlight or penlight :p

The camera that we were using was weird, we couldn't set a certain time limit. There was a mode that would keep the shutter open until it had enough light so it could be 2sec or 20sec. So, sorry, but I can't tell you how long exactly for the photos as I don't even know myself!

i wonder how this comparable this is live, to these pics

the pics are great, but i cant see it being like that live

Time lapse is when you take a picture every so often over a long period of time, usually with a fast shutter speed. All these are is extending exposure time to get more of the light trails, not time lapse.

Just saw your post azn, your friend is really amazing, he spins almost exactly like one of my friends. Really technical and precise.

The things that are lit on fire are kevlar and fiberglass ribbon or rope thats tied into a knot. The type of knot that my fire head is is called a cathedral:

where did you get these?

i would love to put these on the end of my devil sticks! or a flaming diablo - that would be cool too!

I don't know what the best way of doing fire devil sticks are but I'll ask a friend of mine who does do it and he is SICK. I'm pretty sure you need to get a whole set that has fire-resistant/proof rubber on the devil sticks and that the flowers/frills are also not going to catch on fire/melt.

fyi, devil sticks are not flower sticks! devil sticks dont have frilly flower ends on them. the flowers help slow the spin of the stick so beginners can do it quicker.

my devil sticks are made from hardwood (balanced) and have rubber ends that are screwed into the wood to protect the stick.
the sticks that you hold in your hands are already covered in rubber (in order to grab the wood). although in reality i don't think that having fire proof sticks matter because if your twirling the stick correctly then you should never touch the flames with the sticks in your hands. the stick itself should be fireproof.

i was hoping to get some of your cathedral knots and simply screw them in where the rubber pads would normally be. i don't think it would effect the balance too much. the flames would need to be pretty small though.

did you make these knots yourself? what materials did you use? i am pretty stoked to go and try this! i will do some research on google tonight and then i will light my sticks on fire!!!

btw, i don't think that a diablo would work all that well afterall. it might be too hard to get it balanced properly, and then to be able to see the string in the firelight might be pretty impossible.

edit: check out this link to see a pro do some cool devil sticking - now imagine it on fire!!!! he is using the same devil sticks that i have!

Wow this is pretty sick, would love to see it live some time. Can only imagine what it would be like under the right atmosphere.
