lung damage from vaping?

Ok, so we all know that vaping anything other than plain water causes lung damage. But the question is: exactly how much?

(Please don't tell me "well it's a lot better than smoking", etc; I don't smoke, so for me that is irrelevant.)

If I promise not to tell you that it is less harmful than smoking, will you promise not to ask 'But the question is: exactly how much?' ?

The simple and plain truth is that it is less harmful than smoking. However, there have been very few if ANY peer reviewed published papers that show how much less harmful it is than smoking.

By what criteria are you considering harm reduction? Less C02? Less Carbon Monoxide? Less tars? Less Benzene or PAH's? If you ask anyone here (myself including and I've been in research since 1985) they will not be able to give you a satisfactory answer.

In my own opinion, there is a substantial harm reduction when vaporizing as opposed to smoking.

That sucks that no one knows yet :(

In case you are wondering why I asked, I was trying to figure out if the benefits of vaping mullein would outweigh the damage.

It says here: "Smoking Mullein can temporarily increase lung capacity. This is not recommended, however, because it carries the same risks as smoking cigarrettes, burning autumn leaves or barbequing steak" http://members.fortunecity.com/bfoster/stock.htm

Well I could always vape it instead of smoke it. Perhaps mullein could improve my breathholding abilities?

Ok, I know this is an old thread, but I just came across something, at, of all places, FOX NEWS. I don't know if this has been posted here before but check this out: http://www.foxnews.com/health/2012/01/11/marijuana-doesnt-appear-to-harm-lung-function-study-finds/

Two things about this. One, is it's a bit surprising that Fox would report a positive report on MJ and secondly, this from the report. When trying to explain why MJ is less harmful than tobacco, they stated the following: "Unlike cigarette smokers, marijuana users tend to breathe in deeply when they inhale a joint, which some researchers think might strengthen lung tissue." What is really funny about this statement is that the EXACT same reason was suggested in another reports as to why MJ was MORE harmful than tobacco: "Patients who smoke marijuana inhale more and hold their breath four times longer than cigarette smokers. It is the breathing manoeuvres of marijuana smokers that serve to increase the concentration and pulmonary deposition of inhaled particulate matter resulting in greater and more rapid lung destruction.", from the following: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080123104017.htm

I'm new here. Pardon me if I'm ignorant of something the rest of you know about, but how do we know that vaping anything other than plain water causes lung damage? Has this been demonstrated somewhere?

Think about what goes in there. If you vaporize with a bag or whip or through a water pipe, you will see the golden resin build up in there. The same stuff is going into your lungs and gunking them up just like the other pieces along the way. Your body can eliminate some of it just as it would with smoke, but it's still not going to be as good as just breathing fresh air. To say "lung damage" may be a bit strong, but it can't be good for them either.

Imo smoke tars and carbon as oposed to resin doesn't absorb into tissue that well, so is making lungs black long term. Smoke is also toxic, the resin isn't.
