I think a bubbler/bong which filters the vapor is enough. Using a carbon filter on top of that will only remove more of the active substances without much benefit. If that party bong doesn't filter the vapor well enough you could buy a precooler with inline diffuser or something.

I think it's more like years of combustion reduced the ability of the lungs to deal with the vapor (absorb and clean the residue). But yea, it'll most probably go away after a few days/weeks of not combusting anymore.

I personally actually like the sensation in my throat when it makes me almost cough. So I often inhale until I slightly feel this sensation, just 1-2 seconds before it makes me cough.

It may not just be the dryness. If you don't use filtration you may inhale small plant particles, which may cause the air passages to react. If you've been coughing in the last few months your air passages may be more sensitive to vapor. I think the body may also get used to it after a while...
