I was in a very busy restaurant in Italy and figured, go with the fresh specials right?
So I point to "palle del vecchio cavallo" and ask about it. I tried translating it and got "The old horse's balls" so I figured it had to be some sort of epic meatball! Meatballs in Italy, this has to be good right!

yes that's what dining out is for as I see it(from my cultural perspective). around here, we always complain how long you have to wait in reestaurants between courses. once I ate with family at a fancy restaurant, the kind with a lot of tiny courses. because we had to wait so long, and the courses were tiny, we were all still hungry when we were finished, eventhough the amount we actually ate troughout the night was more than a regulkar portion.

I also know of a bit of a comedian from my country comparing his dinigexperience in the US to that in the netherlands, he observed that in the US they were hurried a lot(no time to look trough the menu, serving the next course right after you've finished the previous, no time to drink a cup of coffee afterwards and talk). his reasoning was that because in the US servers make a lot of their money from tips, they're moree inclined to hurry customers trough(more customers is more tips, even if individual customers tip less is they're less satisfied), while here tips are uncommon, servers are just paid by the hour so there is no incentive for them to cram more guests into the time

we also have the simpler fastfoodplaces where you go just to eat though, often that are places that also offer take-away, places like snackbars, pizzeria's, chinese restaurants etc

I don't eat out often though so my experience with it is limited, growing up we never ate out much only with family-occassions, and now I'm a student so I'm too poor to eat out.
In respect to waiters/waitresses rushing people through meals, it's more the restaurants that push the issue. I worked as a cook in a few restaurants and it is the business model of the restaurants to cycle tables as quick as possible. More money for the corporation. Unfortunately many people in the US grossly under tip imho. As a result, I tend overtip.

I have shut down many restaurants as a part of my job and as a result, I will not eat in any non-chain restaurant that I cannot see the kitchen. I cannot tell you the disgusting things I have seen in local restaurant kitchens, from greasy spoon diners to fine dining, they are all the same. layers of grease that coat everything, rotting food left next to cooked food, overflowing toilets next to the kitchen without doors on the bathroom, cigarette butts stuck in grease to the backsplash of a flat-top grill, broken walk-in cooler? no problem just stick that shit in the back room with the broken window, it's winter after all, raw chicken leaking all over everything else under it in the cooler, I have opened refrigerators and almost vomited from the stench of rotting food that was posted on the special menu for that night.
chain restaurants don't bother me because at least I know there is some corporate oversight with far more stringent cleaning regulations than are required by the health board. I have known many many people who have worked in both chain and local restaurants and they all agree that chains are far cleaner. I guess I'll trade off crappy food for the peace of mind that the kitchen has been cleaned sometime in the past decade.

Since they really aren't into TV in Europe, eating out is more of an activity.
wait... are you saying that you watch tv in a restaurant in the US?

tv is popular here too, plenty of people watch it. at home. the only eating establishment I ever visited where I saw a tv is at a snackbar with a few tables wich is a few doors over from a bar/pub I used to go often. it was a very small tv, high on the wall, always at a channel with boring/stupid stuff. I always felt like it was mostly to entertain the people working there, since often there would be no other customers when I came in.

This is a great point, and one of the reasons the chains/franchises with such horrible tasting food are everywhere. The QC/QA is done at the corporate level down, so while a chicken sammich at applebees is simply a frozen, pre-cooked piece or rubber. It's likely not past expiry date.

I used to go to a dentist next to a "soup" place. They would hack at frozen meat OUTSIDE on a dirty table next to pigeon poop, and next to trash barrels and grease barrels. Place was open for longer than I was going to that location, at least 3+ years.

Most people I know that do work travel, and are from the midwest or south , prefer chains even in foreign countries, the main reason is trust. They know they wont get food poisoning at the Olive Garden.

OTOH, every single thing at the olive garden is pre-cooked, frozen and tastes exactly the same... like a stoufers out of the freezer. Add in that the OG in my area hires mostly high school and college kids, understaffs, and is always busy and that = Major profit for the owner and more for the corporation. Pay employees next to nothing, serve up pre-made meals... instant money

If it's a "pub" or "adult" restaurant, it HAS to have HDTVs, small places are hot/cold. Most new places that open, chain or not, have like 4-10 HDTVs to draw in people.

For the US, this means more $$ from drinks and apps. Smart set ups have people wait for tables near the bar area, with huge TVs so they have something to do while waiting, and hopefully order lots of drinks.

In general, NFL games, NCAA football, are the biggest draws.

Even some of the old tymey places around my area have added HDTVs albeit minimally.

The only places that had TVs in Euro were specifically sports pubs or tourist areas.

Cracks me up when I hear someone say that their favorite Italian restaurant is the Olive Garden or their favorite seafood restaurant is Red Lobster.

On another note, what about those A B C D grade inspection signs that are put in the windows. Should they be trusted?

What is food without some risk? I would rather risk bacteria than eat mediocre food. FOOD, SLEEP, and SEX. One should strive for the best and most fulfilling experiences of all three. Life is short, live it like a radiant star.

Yup. Would you rather be with this hooker who was not only tested for aids and proven to be aids free, but also tested for for every VD disease that ever was and is totally clean:

Or...........would you rather be with this one who is also aids free but not tested for gonorrhea, which she may or may not have at all:

btw, both these ladies were gifted to you by your dying uncle who wants to see what kind of decision maker you are before he writes up his will.

Could you just get a blow job from the second person to reduce risks?

Mannnn i can literally put my whip down and get out of my jeep, take LITERALLY three steps and open tha back door and get to work on some serious pizza..
What type of pizza place do you work at? You remind me of a guy I worked with when I sold beer at a grocery store. He made pizzas, except his always looked so much better than the pizzas made by the other employees. I would buy slices of pizza during my lunch break if he made them. Mmmmmm he didn't overuse cheese or oregano, and the crust was as good as crust could get with the tools he had at hand. It's too bad brick oven pizzas, which reach upwards of 900 degrees, are a rare commodity in the pizza business.

I'm going to vape this bowl in your honor. Vape on and continue making bomb pizza. Don't forget the the basil.

I got a bad Subway story. Ordered a sandwich. Took it out to my car. Started driving to where I was going. Got hungry. Opened the sandwich in car. Took a huge bite and then immediately, tasted and smelled.............Pine-sol. The fumes entered my sinuses and lungs. FUCK. I immediately made a u-turn and went back into the Subway.............sandwich in hand. The manager said, "OMG, someone put Pine-Sol in the squirt-bottle where normally, the oil goes." So instead of squirting oil on my sandwich, she squirted fucking Pine-Sol.

That was the last time I went into a SubWay.

The meat at subway is horrible, but I get a veggie delight once in a while. Haven't been back for a while now though because the fakamole grossed me out last time. If it's not in 'n out burger fast food sucks.

Pine sol:puke: , it will probably be even longer before I go back now.

Calamari, oysters, scallops, and boiled peanuts are some of the things that I have experimented with making pizza's back when I still ate them. My ideal pizza is pie style loaded with spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, mushrooms, and banana peppers. Sauce has to be a tasty tomato based one, and I do not really care what type of cheese or bread, as long as it is quality ingredients.

@lwien Wow, that is big, hope someone got fired over that, accident or not. I also give you brownie points for not suing subway for alot of money like you could of(I am guessing you did not sue). Part of the reason zero tolerance is so prelavent in schools and society.

I thought about it but then I didn't get sick or anything, so I just let it go. But I'll tell ya this. If that did damage me in anyway, I would have been after their asses. The only residual stuff I had going on is the taste and smell of Pine-Sol that kind of permeated all my senses for awhile. Reminded of the time when I had to siphon some gas from my friends car and got a mouthful of gasoline. Kinda the same thing.

Introduced my dad to my DBV a couple weeks back. It was strange, I never liked smoking with him, so rarely did so(can count on one hand). It just seems different with vaping, I do not know why. He bought a DBV a week after I turned him onto vaping.

We need this in Cali! Most of the "brick oven" pizza places out here still don't do anything from scratch, they just have a nice oven. Shitty sauce, dried moz (not fresh) frozen/canned/bagged toppings ... always empty.

There are like 3 places in the whole area that actually do both a brick oven pizza AND use fresh dough/sauce/cheese. Although technically it's really hard to do fresh pizza dough in San Francisco as the water here is better for sour dough style dough which is a bit distinct and not great for pizza.

Even one place out here straight up servers "Sour dough pizza" and it's absolutely fucking awful as sour dough is very strong / tough. It's like trying to eat canvas after a sour dough goes into a high heat oven
