VHW not getting hot enough?

** WARNING, IF YOUR VHW IS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. ALSO, IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE DOING THIS, PLEASE EMAIL ME AND WE CAN ARRANGE FOR IT TO BE SENT BACK AND WE WILL WORK ON IT PERSONALLY **

** PLEASE DO NOT TAKE OFF GLASS HEATER COVER UNLESS SOMETHING IS BROKEN **

Hey guys, just wanted to give you a heads up that we found out why some heaters aren't getting hot enough and with a little time, you should be able to "fix" your VHW. I'm in the process of getting some pictures to help with this modification or we can do it for you, whichever is easiest for you. Turns out that the manufacturer sent us some wands with different settings that can be self modified so your VHW functions like mine. Be back when I have more info and instructions!

edit - v1 of instructions

1, remove the glass cover,
THIS MEANS FIRST UNSCREW AND THEN REMOVE THE GLASS PART OF THE UNIT--UNSCREW THE SCREW ABOVE THE TEMP GAUGE. PULL OFF AND SEPARATE THE GLASS (WITH SILICONE SLEEZE STILL ON)) FROM THE LOWER WAND.

2 pop the temp adjuster dial off,
JUST USE YOUR FINGERNAIL ON ONE SIDE AND POP IT OFF.

3 remove the two long screws,
THERE ARE 3 SCREWS BUT YOU ONLY CAN SEE THE FULL LENGTH OF 2 OF THEM. REMOVE THOSE 2.

4 ease the grey "plug " out and push the cord in at the same time to expose the internals,,
THE GREY PART THAT'S LIKE A SHORT GRAY CORK--START PULLING THAT OUT AND THEN YOU CAN ALSO PUSH ON THE CORD ATTACHED AT THE BOTTOM. PUSH THE CORD ITSELF (NOT THE FLEXIBLE END PART).

5 with a small screw driver turn the variable (VT1, the closest one to the actual temp dialm leave VT2 "as is") resistor counter- clockwise.. turn it all the way (highest setting), and then back it off 3 hash marks. At full power, we think it will melt the glass possibly, so please don't go higher than 3 hash marks from all the way counterclockwise
I DIDN'T HAVE A SCREWDRIVER THIS TINY AND I THOUGHT I HAD A SMALL SCREWDRIVER. YOU MIGHT NEED ONE. I ACTUALLY TRIED A COUPLE OF RANDOM THINGS BEFORE ACTUALLY WHITTLING A CHOPSTICK WITH A KNIFE. MY DIAL WAS ON THE 4TH HASHMARK FROM THE END OF A COUNTERCLOCKWISE TURN. I TURNED IT ALL THE WAY THEN BACKED IT TO THE 3RD HASHMARK. ONLY MOVED ONE NET HASH YET SEEMS TO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE.

Interesting. Keep is in the loop. I think my unit works pretty well, but the ability to turn it up just a schoche would be stellar. Thanks again for all your hard work and dedication to the vapor-realm sm55. You'da man.

I thought that when the red light went on that meant that the element was heating up?
When I turn the variable resistor counter-clockwise it lights up. It seems as though when I turn it clockwise it cools down, is this right?

you got it, counter clockwise is hotter, clockwise is cooler. So go all the way counter clockwise, then clockwise for 3 hash marks.

stonemonkey55,
try turning clockwise(coolest setting) then 3 hash marks (mmmmm hash...) counterclockwise (getting warmer..)

I just did this myself because while I thought the VHW was working, i couldn't easily get the cloudy type hits that others were showing on their videos. I don't necessarily want those types of hits, but i am a vapor novice and just wasn't sure if i was doing something wrong. Before the mod, my friend would sometimes have almost invisible vapor (that still worked and cooked the herbs). I was better at it and got light wispy vapors. Another problem was people recommended using it at about 2/3 power and so if it was not getting as hot, this obviously was not the correct setting (and as a novice, I was mainly using 2/3 power based on these recs).

However, i did the mod just now. And it works. It def gets hotter because I took it again at 2/3 power and got a lot more vapor. At full power, I was actually scared I burned it because it was a cloudy hit.

Now to help others, I'll annotate the instructions (NOT OFFICIAL, JUST WHAT I DID):

1, remove the glass cover,
THIS MEANS FIRST UNSCREW AND THEN REMOVE THE GLASS PART OF THE UNIT--UNSCREW THE SCREW ABOVE THE TEMP GAUGE. PULL OFF AND SEPARATE THE GLASS (WITH SILICONE SLEEZE STILL ON)) FROM THE LOWER WAND.

No prob. The VHW is great. I really enjoy it over smoking. I think it's great for a newbie (and apparently great for old pros as well) I think the mod made a significant difference, but maybe I'm crazy (what level did the manufacturer say they set some of them on?). I am eager to get the new silicone sleeve as that is the part that seems the most imprecisely manufactured but it works fine anyway.
