The United Nations of Fuck Combustion

I used to enjoy looking at the little applet that used to be on the Purple Days website which showed the locations of those that had visited the website. It made for interesting daydreaming- I remember Antartica showing on the list at one point and imagining some scientist down there stuck in his freezing lab pining for a few stems of vapor (I'm aware in reality it was probably some quirk of the IP address, rather than an genuine Antartican scientist).

So I was thinking about the range of nations we've got here on FC. Obviously we're skewed towards the developed English speaking world, but I think we've got a pretty good representation from all corners of the globe.

Let's see. Show some flags.

Especially if you're from somewhere interesting and not overly well represented on FC- post here and let us know. Africans, Asians, South Americans.... I'd love to know where else all this shit I write is being read.

And to keep it interesting, and maybe learn something, if you're from any kind of disputed territory or have independence tendencies, and you identify with that flag instead then let's see that. For example I'm not feeling particularly British nowadays- rather an Englishman settled in Scotland who politically has picked up some anti unionist sentiments as time has gone on and the UK gov't changed- and so I'm going to be flying The Saltire instead of the Union Jack.

I read djonkoman asserting his being Frisian over Dutch in another thread. Post your flag here djonkoman, if there is one?

Any Basque FC members flying the Ikurrina instead? (any Basque members at all?)

And what about the US- does everyone identify with the main US flag? when I was over there I saw this other flag flying (I think it was in Delaware that I saw it) which had what looked like a Union Jack in place of the stars- I meant to look it up, but I forgot 'till now and never did (I will now). And also the old Confederate flag? Would anyone on here identify with that? It's not portrayed too favourably in the media that we see here, but I don't necessarily take that for reality. Do the US states each have their own flags? Some English counties do.

Anyway, here's my wee contribution:

I'm hoping we'll see some FC members from some fine and unexpected places, and to maybe see some flags I've never seen....

Sorry Djonko, I guess I beat you to it. It seems to be a popular one as well from googling it, it's used for all sorts of fun stuff:

I guess you didn't know I was a Frysian too, Wat. Djonko and I only live about 5 miles from each other. We've never met though, not as far as we're aware of anyway.

I'm not a particular proud Frysian myself but was always raised more Dutch, if there is such a thing. Or not even that perhaps..

I prefer to see myself as a citizen of the world rather then 'limit' my roots to just a single spot. It just feels more appropriate to me somehow. Perhaps it comes from having Indonesian grandparents (mothers side). I can feel at home anywhere it seems, but strange enough it often seems the hardest in my own country.

indeed you beat me to it :p
but I can still add something, the story behind the flag. the current flag is pretty recent, but it's based on an older alliance between a few different frieslands/frisian kingdoms/empires
the pomeblden(the red hearts, wich are actually red waterlily leaves) represent those frisan states paricipating in the alliance, the blue are waters/rivers seperating them.

were you raised in leeuwarden? because I notice that friends who grew up in leeuwarden identify a lot less with friesland, and you hear far less frisian n leeuwarden, a lot more 'import'
while I grew up in a village, were it's weird if you can't speak frisian(was born in leeuwarden tough).
I'm completely bilangual btw, my mother is dutch(understands frisian but never speaks it herself), my father frisian. depending on the person I speak frisian or dutch. often when I meet someone first I will speak dutch, unless I'm adressed in frisian, or just have a feeling they know frisian

Here you go from the great state of Oregon! All states have their own flags they fly below the USA flag.

"The Oregon State Flag is the only state flag displaying different images on each side.

The front shows a heart shaped shield with an eagle on top, surrounded by 33 stars, for the 33 states in 1859.

The image on the shield shows the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean with trees, mountains and a covered wagon.

A plow, wheat and pickax represent farming and mining.

There are two ships as well. A British ship is leaving and a US ship is arriving, representing trade.

The eagle represents the United States. On a banner are the words "The Union," representing support for the United States.

The flag is emblazoned with the words "State of Oregon" above the picture and the date of statehood, 1859 below.

The opposite side of the flag shows a beaver, the state animal."

Every state has its own flag, as does every Canadian province. The flag you saw might have been in Delaware, but the only one that matches that description is Hawaii's state flag:

The Antarctica blip was me, most likely. I was there for the '10 winter/early '11 spring season. From Sep - Mar. I was buying myself a PD so it would be there when I got back. It wasn't 100% white down there. There was green to be found here and there, but I was indeed "pining for a few stems of vapor"

Lots of better picks of the flags at the pole online, but this one's mine!
