The Ubie

After reading this thread, I decided to pull my Ubie's out of storage. It's been years since I used them, but I think I can still do it. :)

I made it just for you, Vicki.... no joke!
I though that if you and I "jived" on a "vibe" today.... and remembered our Ubies... then I would make you a vid!

Wow, thank you!! :D

It has been years since I used these, but I got the hang of it again pretty quickly. Do you use yours very often?

Not very often. I had a couple, and passed them out... then... I ordered a couple from PuffitUp to give to a few younger patients I met....
I decided to re explore today!

Same here, I put mine back away in storage. It is just so much easier to use my MFLB now. I really don't care for using a lighter to vaporize either. It seems like a lot more work to me.

OK, I'll admit it, I was a bit disappointed to realize you like Vicki more than me. But then I realized there's no doubt a whole host of reasons behind that and when it comes right down to it she's easier on the eyes than both of us put together. Then I got over that whole thing (not the least 'cuz I might like her better than you.....she doesn't snub me you know....) and finally watched the video.

Damn, ya did it again! I dug mine out, it still had a really dry bud left from my last disappointing attempt as silent testimony to my doing it wrong. Silly me, I'd followed (I thought) the directions, not used your so obviously superior technique. The BS of drawing enough hot air in to do straight convection is really lame IMO. I should have known to 'look to the Sage of the High Desert' for enlightenment. Then again, the video is new.....

Anyway, using your technique, the little rascal came alive. It's a bit touchy to get it exactly right, but it works surprisingly well when you get reasonably close. It fun to play with in a Vapman sorta way. The way the MFLB was before shaking and grinding right became automatic and the PA changed all the rules yet again. Time to put this puppy on line, I bet a lighter, a few pinches of herb and one of these (I have 2...) would make a great 'emergency kit'.....

Thanks once again, oh Wise One, for passing on the Wisdom of the Ages to us (new as that wisdom might actually be, it's good prospectively.....). And thanks very much to Ms. Vicki for the critical role she played so well.

Thanks OF... that was really nice!
I will comment... that my earlier disappointments with the Ubie were resolved by using a blue flame and a torch... a lighter just does not "cut it"...
This is where my thanks go to Randy from PuffitUp!
When I ordered the new Ubies (second one is only $5) he included a lighter.. that looked very much like a disposable butane lighter... but it is actually a small torch.

Hey, you earned it again, dude. Try as I might, you're due your due ya know. Please keep it up! I find more nice things to say somewhere......

You're spot on, a Bic isn't gonna cut it heat control wise. I naturally reached for the small torch lighter I use on the Vapman turned down a bit. Then I dug out a really nice Blazer I got for the VG that didn't work well since the flame goes straight up.....a match made in heaven. A $30 lighter on a $7 vape. My kinda logic. Somewhere I have my old 'one hitter' zipper case, I gotta go dig that out now. I know the Eubie will fit in fine.......

Thanks again for waking me up to fun stuff I already had. Two more Attaboys for your bulging account.

It would seem I need a torch lighter to use with my Ubie's, which I don't have, but can get. :)

I tried a 'candle flame' lighter (like a Bic) earlier just to be sure. Made a mess, was hard to control and kinda burnt my fingers before I got any vapor. The torch is a lot better IMO. Even a cheap one. Provided it's turned down a bit in some cases.

Hey, thanks again for kicking Vitolo. Disgusting as that is sometimes, it often results in useful gems from him like this one.

OK, just for the drill, here's a couple of cheap lighter suggestions:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/honest-1300-c-butane-jet-lighter-11868
This is the guy Lotus ships and sells, very handy, holds a fair bit of fuel.

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/jet-1300-c-butane-lighter-1320
These guys are great, fit the pocket well. 3 safeties for folks that like that stuff. I'm pretty sure this is the one Vapman has on their site and uses in their video.

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/honest-adjustable-flame-butane-jet-torch-lighter-19321
This is the big brother of the above. Holds a huge fuel supply (not the one above is any slouch). More of a table top deal, big with the swing and nail guys. Also for sale by Vapman.

These guys, Dealextreme, are OK IMO. Ship quickly (free) you usually get stuff in two weeks or less (I've made 4 or 5 small orders over the years). Once or twice I had to sign for it, no big deal but a hassle.

Anyway, for ten bucks you can order 3 or so and have them soon?

I have the first and the last lighter, i use it in my gn0me which is a bit thicker i believe than the Ubie. I would say the last one has too big of a flame, even in the lowest setting. It would work but maybe too fast to control temp. hehe. :D

I don't doubt it a bit. I've used several copies of the first two (in fact have two right here) but not the third. Perhaps I should have said as much? That unit has been suggested by other Members and I think is the one sold by Vapman, but could well be too large (I never ordered one because of it's size).

Thanks very much, seems like a good tip.

Interesting concept; connecting the Ubie to a bong with an O Ring. Never considered that but it makes sense.
Just a matter of finding a properly sized O ring to mate with the Ubie and fit over the downstem.
Don't think it would work out with a straight tube as material would fall through the Ubie and into the bong, correct?
question... what would be the point of attaching it to the bong.. would this be because the air from the bong is not? I am not sure I follow... tell me! :)

For a nice carrying case for your Ubie... see the post on the Puffitup thread.
I call mine my "Ub Toob"

This is what I use:
http://www.planetvape.ca/doob-tubes.html

Same sort of thing, smaller and perhaps cheaper? I think you get a couple free with Omicron cart orders now. I do note they misspelled "Up Toob" badly, didn't they?

BTW Harborside sells them for a buck each, if you're a Nor Cal type......

Good call. They're really useful for lots of stuff. Very gas tight, too. I put a bit of ISO in one inside a plastic bag and put it in the sun for the afternoon. Not only didn't it loose any weight, but it also had no smell inside the bag. This was using only one of the two seals, too. I put a bit of cotton or folded cloth in the bottom of Omicron cart tubes to blot up any accidents and provide a bit of padding. It's also a handy way to put a loaded cart and thread adapter in your travel kit for Revolution, Dart and Evolutions and so on. This makes it really easy to convert over if needed. Also a handy way to bring a couple of strains with you (each in it's own tube).

I'm sure you'll have no trouble filling five up, I have faith you know.....

So I did not believe this thing would work but it does. However I cannot tell how much I am inhaling since I usually get invisible vapor on exhale. It's certainly not a ton since it depends on how strong your flame is; I did it over a stove and got way more than a lighter.

Any advice on this thing? Take more hits to get sufficiently high?

And since I'm new to mj and vaping, how to I know when the weed has been exhausted? Brown without any green at all?

I think those were all my questions, thank you!

mod note: Three posts merged with existing Ubie thread.

There is a thread about the Ubie in the portable section, you may find the info about it there.

My ABV is always brown to dark brown, with the Ubie i would say it will be more difficult to have an even roasting of the material because there is a lot of conduction happening and some black bits are to be expected, at least until you master it.

The weed is exausted when there is no more vapor and the material is dark brown, or when you take another hit and you get a sour smoky taste in your mouth. Some people stop way before this happens though, and with some vaporizers it is almost impossible to combust so it is easier to know when it is done.
Bear in mind that when the roast is not even there can be a sour taste already and still have goodies in other parts of the bowl.

Enjoyed my new Ubie last night. Didn't take too long to get it rolling - big clouds. Used a torch lighter and just sensed the hot spot where the heat was rising and put the Ubie tip over that area (angling the Ubie upwards to keep the herb near the mouthpiece).

Had a lot of fun with it, but I had the taste of the lighter in my mouth for quite awhile. The combustion by-products from a torch flame have a distinct taste, which is hard for me to shake. Not wanting to inhale too much of that lighter soot and being sensitive to the taste, I'm not sure how much I will use the Ubie, but it cannot be beat for portability. Might try with a diferent heat source next time.

I don't have the same problem with my Vapor Genie I think because the lighter heats up the ceramic piece making it more conduction, and therefore not requiring the lighter to be burning as long as the convection Ubie.

Was digging around in some boxes and found one of my old Ubies. Overcome by a lark, I decided to mess around with using a retained heat method ala vapes like the Gn0me and Vapocane and found it to work just fine. Great caution must be taken to heat only the extreme 1/2 inch or so of the outer tube, and to not heat the intake holes to the point where they would begin to collapse - this is well away from where your sweet vaporizing spot will be, so just be careful and err on the side of hitting it while too cool. Rotate the ubie constantly and apply the heat along all that 1/2 inch, perhaps biasing it a bit so you give less heat to the areas directly around the intake hole.

Both parts of the Ubie are made of extremely thin glass. Use great caution when heating them. That having being said, the humble Ubie, perhaps the cheapest vaporizer worth discussing and an often brought up emergency or disposable solution, can be used very effectively with absolutely zero butane in the airpath.
