I have to check who asked this...
Let me ask it another way. Anyone here try the Splinter Z v2? Why is the Ghost (or is the Ghost) better?
The ghost is a Tricky device for me, Splinter too many techniques , not enough performance for me, both good devices, sold them both, just... not for me.
Can you post a picture of the 2 screen method? What do you use for the inserted screen?First off you asked about the Splinter Z v2. The Splinter Z v1 and v2 are the same thing. The only thing different is the v2 is Blackwood and the v1 is Bubinga. Same rule for the Splinter v1 and v2.
I now have had a Ghost for 2 days and I have had 2 Splinters v1 and v2 for a while. I love my Splinters, they are the easiest things to load and use. I use the 2 screen method to suck the herb higher into the glass stem. Since I started using the 2 screen method (on up top, and then the rimmed one at the bottom to make sure nothing falls out) the quality of the avb is very consistent and it is much more difficult to char the herb or get a hot spot. I do not have a Splinter Z, but I really doubt there's much difference once you load the herb higher in the stem. I liked the trade off of 1) shorter heatup time, 2) shorter height and of course 3) cheaper price of the Splinter vs the Splinter Z. The main advantage of the Z is that you can use 19/22 3d party stems, including some nice cooling stems.
Having said all that there are two main advantages of the Ghost vs Splinter. 1) The Ghost has the best cooling system of any vape on the market. The Splinters XL8R stem cannot match what is going on in the Ghost. Yes you can cool down the vapor in the Splinter with technique and/or TCR, but the vapor path of the Splinter (and every 510 mod) has the heat going straight up into your throat. The Ghost still produces massive clouds, but those clouds are cooled and easier to inhale. It's kind of like having the Splinter + Hydrotube in one compact unit. Check out the VapeCritics review of the Ghost at the 2'34" second point he explains the airpath in the Ghost. 2) The other advantage of the Ghost is the "plug and play" "set and forget" aspect of it. The Ghost does all the heating control for you. With a Splinter you need to play around and learn the device. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, if you like "playing" with TCR and pre-heating curves the Splinters are an absolute joy. But if you want a device that works the exact same way every time, something you can pass to a friend/spouse and you don't want them to either get a 0 hit or a monster hit that makes them cough for 5 minutes, then the Ghost is perfect.
The Splinter however let's you take pretty monstrous draws in about 3 seconds however. Set it to 35w or greater, press button for 5-6 seconds to pre-heat and then pretend like you're hitting a bong for 3 seconds and you can get a pretty massive instantaneous vapor infusion. You don't have to use it like that... but you can.
Also the Ghost has a "dainty" little mouth piece that encourages a slower draw. The Splinter feels like drinking from a Bubble Tea straw. Having that wide opening sort of encourages me to take a harder draw.
Having said all that I can see myself keeping the Ghost as my main driver. I'm kind of worried that we'll start seeing throat issues developing from people simple sipping all this hot vapor. Drinking of super hot tea, like they do in some parts of Asia and Maté in South American has been linked to esophageal cancer, just from the heat of the water, not any chemicals in the tea. So when I'm at home I usually run my Splinter through a hydrotube. With the Ghost I can go out for a walk and get this amazingly flavorful and cool vapor while enjoying my surroundings instead of paying attention to my vaporizer.
Yeah, pretty much as long as they're in business I agree that the BF price was excellent and honestly they'd be following the plan that made me such a Splinter fan since I've purchased all of them with some sort of discount and many have been dramatic like the MV1 deal.Fear not @bossman. I for one have no doubt that they are sticking around. Here's what ghost-ops wrote on the VLF 3 days ago:
"We are working on resupplying battery packs and can assure everyone that we will have these available again as soon as we can - just can't put a date on it at the moment, much as we'd like to.
Thanks
Mark"
Yes, it's very possible that an MV-2 is around the corner & GV is unloading stock ... BUT, for conjecture, it's also possible that the steep price reduction may or may not have anything to do with a new release or excess stock, but simply is to create a solid customer base. Many interested peeps shied away from the MV-1 because of the issues prior to Spring 2018 & the hefty price. Of the peeps who bought during this sale, it appears that it's almost 100% satisfaction.
@bossman, since you love the Splinter so much, I think you should have grabbed the MV-1 at this price because I think you would be very pleased with it.
2x packs of cigarettes in Oz.will only lose about $125.

Nope, the last 50gram pack of roll your own tobacco cost me AU$78 just over 2 years ago when I was going through a pack every 4 days (one of the main reasons for quitting tobacco).@LesPlenty, don't you mean 2 cartons?

The Splinter works well with a bubbler and lots of folks use it that way. You'll need that 18/18 adapter and a bubbler with an 18m female glass joint.Thank you Bossman, Siebter, Summer, Floribud, etal for sharing your thoughts and comments about the Splinter. I took the plunge and ordered a "package" from Rastabuddhatao. Cole was very helpful. The package includes 2 Splinter Z V2s and a clear XL8R mouthpiece. In for a dollar in for a pound I also ordered a package that has a XL8R and 3 screens. Finally, I also ordered a Reuleaux RX GEN3 Dual Mod device directly from Wismec. All tolled I spent less than the price of a discounted Mighty. After perusing the forums, and noting that the vapor may be uncomfortable for me, I was wondering if a bubbler would be recommend. I have never used a bong and don't think I want to mess with, so that's why I am asking about the bubbler.
I still really like my Mighty.
