The one at ratshack mentioned above uses a incandescent light versus a pure white LED. Not quite as good.

Do NOT buy that carson. Its a POCKET SCOPE,NOT a USB scope. If you need a pocket scope get this carson - http://www.amazon.com/Carson-Micro-Max-Lighted-Microscope/dp/B0009MFTSW/ref=pd_bxgy_sg_img_c . The VEHO can be had for $57 on Amazon, which is what I paid for mine. And its does 20-400X Magnification. If you dont know how to use a microscope for best results....plain & simple, you shouldnt own one (big,high-dollar models).Just stick with these smaller ones...

That's kind of an odd statement, Fear. I would think that one needs to get one to learn how to use it for best results, and 13 bucks isn't too much to spend on the learning process, eh?

I mean, I don't know if I know how to use one or not. Does that mean I shouldn't get one?

Sorry...that applied to big-dollar high powered scopes. Anything above the VEHO basically... I dont really consider these lil things "microscopes" perse...more of a "macro lens".

Fear, is there a reason why you suggest this one over the one I first posted up? The one you posted up uses an incandescent light versus an LED. Curious as to why you like this one over that one. I'm about to pull the trigger, but I don't know much about these.
I own it...It uses an LED. A VERY VERY bright LED at that  Also,if you notice on Amazon,it got better reviews and has more. :D Not to mention its the newer/better model!!

^^ That was the first one I posted up, but he suggested to get the one he has instead, and he said that the one he has an LED, but according to Carson, it doesn't. Just a bit confused, that's all.

I use my re-purposed stereo gemscope- not the exact same model but an older one, very similar to this:
http://store.gia.edu/PresentationScope_10x_30x_p/910030.htm
but mine has a floro top light in addition to the darkfield halogen lower light.. from my school days- not bought to inspect buds, but stones...

I bought the same one you found at B&H, and ended up throwing it away. Blurry, too small field of view and just plain bad. Sorry lwien, but I'd choose a good quality loupe over that one any day. A loop and pen light if you need to have more light, or a lighted loupe. 10x-15x should be plenty, but you can get higher powers.

I said not to get the one you posted cuz it was on ALT & theyre a rip off...you can find the Micro-Max 200 on Amazon for $13.

Mattybass - that is the one I have...My mistake,at a glance the 100 & 200 look alike. :/

Plant - Dont be discouraged. You gotta start somewhere...This is called a learning process. You posted one thing, others posted BETTER things (products) & other options... :D

You can get some pretty nice scopes from Edmunds Scientific. Just Google Edmunds Scientific. You can even get one that connects to your computer and you can view your subject on your screen in fairly decent resolution. Not all that expensive so just about anyone can afford them. They also some lower priced optical scopes.
I thought that Edmunds may also have some Soxhlet extractors for making really good tinctures and hash/weed oil. They did have some small affordable Pyrex Soxhlets a few years ago.

FYI, incandescent light puts off heat from the filament and is therefore exothermic. LED's do not. The heat exotherm can cause damage or slight thermionic movement distortion to organic subjects (herbs) resulting in distorted images. Therefore LED's are better in this case. :2c:
