I was buttering my corn and had my technique corrected

I was at a barbecue, it was a hot day and we were near the pond. We sat down to eat after a day of bocce and snorkeling. Hamburgers and hot dogs were the main course with potato salad and that famous Mass sweet corn. I began to butter my corn using a soup spoon. I find the spoon wraps around the ear a bit and the spoon holds a ton of butter so I can get that ear how I like. I was halfway through and an old guy got a little snarky and suggested I use a knife and to go up and down instead of "spinning my ear like a dreidel". He even showed my what he meant. I heard at least one chuckle from someone so it stung a bit. I wound up just kind of nodding and put my head down and enjoyed my meal but I am confused. Is there a real technique here?

This was always my favorite technique.

The old guy was half right--- butter left/right/left right, typewriter style. Spinning the ear is uncivilized.
Knife is bad advice ;) I now use a fork which grips the butter better than a spoon :)

I have some "sous vide" corn in the water right now. 180 F for one hour: cooked with butter and salt and a little pepper.
Yum yum

My mom taught me to clarify butter, then pre-butter sweet corn and biscuits with a basting brush right after taking off the heat to preserve moisture.

She also taught me to smuggle good salt and clarified butter in mason jars into movie theatres for a much better popcorn life.

 out to everyone taking the time to bond with younger generations and pass down that knowledge!

My husband’s family with eight kids growing up would lay the ear of corn on top of the cube of butter, then spin it until the whole ear was covered in butter. By the time everyone was done the cube of butter was all gone.

And pass it along to seniors that missed that hot tip on butter and salt. I suffer thru the big consumption of the artificial yellow color, artificial butter flavored substance, cuz sprinkled with salt, it does sorta feel like butter?????
Real butter would be about 1000X better :)

How do you keep the clarified butter liquid, and if the answer involves the
word anus, please don't answer ;)

If the question is, “how does one carry clarified butter into a theater?”, I put a jar of it in my purse.

A 4 oz canning jar works well:

OR

If you wanna flex, pour the clarified butter into an 8 oz jelly jar (same diameter as above shorter jars) - they hold a LOT of butter and fit snugly into standard beer cooziemto keep the heat for hours:

https://www.amazon.com/Ball-Mason-Quilted-Jelly-Bands/dp/B00B80TJUI/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1535163671&sr=8-6&keywords=8+oz+jelly+jars

If the question is, “how does the butter stay liquid?”, one can clarify it within a few hours of using it and the glass jar will retain enough heat to get you through that time or you can insulate the jar further (e.g. coozie) to retain heat for longer.

maybe we can put whole ears of buttered corn into special jars and bring them into movie theatres. I can watch Scarlette johanson in a skin suit and eat delicious sweet corn at the same time

Off the topic, but I recently learned that I have been peeling banana's the wrong way. You’re probably thinking, "Is there a right way?” If you watch apes, they usually open what we consider the bottom of the banana. When I tried it I found that not only does it work well, (you don't end up smashing the top of the banana) it opens much easier. If you haven't already done so, give it a try...

And I am guessing he turned out alright? Does he still conduct himself in this manner? If so, he's a man after my own heart.
