I do think when the inner plates get that hot in the wand if you're drawing while heating it can create a hotspot/jet that you can hear (if it's quiet) and tends to lead to combustion wherever that jet hits the herb.

I use a short sliver collar on a perf cap to retain the heat so the air flow doesn't cool it as fast. It does add to the heat up time in the wand so if I'm doing 1/2 bowls it's more efficient to get a quick hit and short reheat w/out the extra heatmass.

here's a roast comparison, 1/2 bowl on sm tip; 7sec in ufo for 1 hit, 4+sec to 2nd hit. 1/4 bowl in XL (about same amount of herb) 12sec in the wand OHE. could have got a darker abv from the sm one if I drew a bit harder and added a sec. ps, I always draw while heating.
