it could be that this 2nd atty (a constriction) accumulates quite a bit of heat during heating thanks to the copper surrounding it, and that thje vapor likes to pass through this warm, constricted passage.

Tornado specific

Many aftermarket stems will work well with the Tornado imo, which doesn't get too hot and has a rather gentle vapor. The ones I've been able to try pose no problems whatsoever, neither for the vapor nor for the stem. The @ScruffyWoofers's solution looks neat!
