Hey @Grobalot nice to see you here again. That's a terrible state of affairs with your medication and I sincerely hope you're able to maintain your health and wellbeing. Cant blame you for giving up on the Brexit process, when you think it cant possibly get any worse or more farcical it just...
I really think its time one of his advisers took Mr Johnson to one side, and explained to him quietly and discreetly that a key part of being Prime Minister is governing. Since his tenure as PM began he has signally failed in this area with all the focus being on well, breaking the law...
So did anyone else think "Letwin" was another composite word like "Brexit" until he spoke in Parliament yesterday ? lol...and why isn't "brextention" in our vocabularies yet ?
HMV ? there are still 3 shops in and around Glasgow. I live approx. 7 miles from the city centre so its a quick commute...actually it was a recent visit to HMV that triggered my current interest in exploring sci-fi more thoroughly than I have done up til now. I'm planning on finishing "Non Stop"...
I see "The Gods Themselves" is part of Gollancz SF Masterworks series, as have all my recent purchases...another candidate for the (rapidly expanding) reading list. There's a few of the slimmer volumes in the SF Masterworks series can be bought in 2 for £5 type offers in some of the city centre...
I read The Stars My Destination before I started Non Stop - excellent book and The Demolished Man is high on my reading list. Spent some time this afternoon hanging out on the doorstep with my cat (her name is Maisie and she's my avatar star!) and reading :)
@Grobalot Dangerous visions is...
I've developed a penchant for science fiction lately. I've just finished reading "The Stars my Destination" (AKA Tiger Tiger) by Alfred Bester. A quick read but very good. I should finish "Non Stop" by Brian Aldiss over the weekend. Again, a short but very enjoyable novel. Both of these were...
Hey guys ! Nice to see you all over here ! Can I have some recommendations for Ursula Le Guin novels please ? Believe it or not the name is new to me but her reputation appears to be pretty awesome. @ClearBlueLou I've been giving the Lensmen series some consideration. I'd like to read something...
I left a question on the book thread for you guys to get the ball rolling over there
Edit : there is another book thread but I've posted on Bookworm corner too. Apologies if I sent anyone on a detour round FC !
Hey guys ! Can anyone recommend some Ursula Le Guin novels ? the name is new to me but her reputation seems pretty awesome. Many thanks in advance.
Edit to reflect that this was intended for the bookworms thread. Sorry for the potential detour !
Lol cant say I disagree with any of the above @Grobalot. When I look at the state of UK and US politics (it beggars believe that earlier this week a President possibly facing impeachment was patting the back and offering words of reassurance to a PM about to return to the UK where his...
Thanks @ClearBlueLou and @Grobalot for your recommendations. I read the Dune Trilogy last summer (having sought out pre-owned copies of the New English Library editions from the 70s or 80s.) I have The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch ready to read and also purchased the Dangerous Visions...
I'm on a bit of a "classic sci-fi" tip at the moment and have The Foundation Trilogy in my sights, I'd like to build a small-ish but high calibre collection. I'm currently reading "Non Stop" by Brian Aldiss which I'd heartily recommend - no novel this short should be so immersive and compelling...
Thanks for that @macbill, looks like we need all the support we can get. I'm not sure whether to watch "Question Time" on bbc or continue reading this old science fiction novel I picked up....somehow both activities feel very similar lol.
Perhaps this is an indication that I should vape less flower during the day but...Whilst watching Jacob Rees-Mogg address the speaker of the house this afternoon, just for a moment I thought he was going to morph into Johnny Rotten - same obtuse, sarcastic tone :leaf:
I suspect someone has already started with the house of commons water supply sometime yesterday. Yes I believe we are well and truly fucked. what worries me more than the braying donkeys of Westminster is the acquisition of potential new trade partners. As you say we are a laughing stock...I...
We live through interesting times my friend. I'm having a sabbatical of sorts from work at the moment and I've been watching the resumption of the house of commons this morning. There are some very interesting legal and constitutional points being discussed. Geoffrey Cox the Attorney General is...
To misguide the queen to such extent as to unlawfully cease the business of parliament for, to quote directly from the supreme court ruling " no good reason" sounds more like a disregard for the constitution to me, not a"political difference" did I even mention hanging ?
