The auto-magic super rZToaster, or something like that..

Hi all. Fortunately I'm still alive, and so is my prototype :) Unfortunately, I lost my dad almost a year ago. He passed due to liver failure after a long decline. I took over many of his responsibilities towards both my immediate and extended family which, along with increasing...

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

Did somebody say parasitic oscillation? Add some pushbutton switching noise to the mix while at it..

The auto-magic super rZToaster, or something like that..

Sorry guys I'm way overdue for an update. Not at home now so no screens hots etc. . I've had a lot of other things I've had to focus on recently, but always making progress (surely but slowly) with this proj. I redid the mosfet layout to improve thermal characteristics. I got a new oscilloscope...

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

@io_wait let me know when you find a good chip :) the BMS under/over voltage is "per-cell", so the charge cutoff will be when ANY cell hits the value... dunno what chip model it is (usually there are tens of varations of each model actually), but usually around 2.5V/4.2V. You could find chips...

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

@io_wait welcome to FC! :) Glad you're getting in on the DIY action. Li-po cells need to be handled with a little extra care. There's a region of safety where the cell can comfortably accept charge, and out of that 'zone', the cell will deteriorate much faster (/ too fast?). LiPo's are...

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

@nachooo the circuit does work with 2S, however like @Pipes mentioned I use a boost converter to increase gate drive voltage to a predictable ~12V, even while pack voltage drops to about 5V where the BMS cuts it out. I found some MOSFETS that only needed about 6V to start oscillating, and most...

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

@zky42 Welcome! Congrats on the IH build. looking nice and snug in there. Please be super careful to avoid any short circuits as these batteries can pack a serious punch. If that is copper foil, it looks pretty close to some critical areas that may not even be protected by your BMS!. Look into...

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

@Copacetic rZToaster is still in the works! :) Though indeed, the little addition to the fam has required some extra attention, along with a lot of other things keeping me busy.. other kids.. aging parents.. work.. me.. I've had to do some stress management to stay sane, so development has...

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

@phattpiggie IH surfing - best way to F@#k the click! Srsly, once you get the hang of it, it's super quick and efficient. I can complete a cap before my buddies even finish grinding their shiznit.

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

@FryMeALiver See my revised answer. You should rather pick a 3S cell pack, and @KeroZen has some good suggestions as to which. Either of the two protection boards you linked to above should do. If you have the space, take the one with cell balancing as this will have a good return on investment...

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

@FryMeALiver The first battery pack would probably be capable, though it's hard to tell if it will work or not (by design). Firstly, the battery is rather large, has the stated capacity to run an IH for many many sessions, and is lithium ion, so is probably capable of delivering the sporadic ~7A...

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

These? With batteries, capacitor, induction coil + PCB.. the smaller ones are too tight inside, bigger ones.. too big?(but would work). something exactly between 1455C801 and 1455K1201 would be perfect but the ones inbetween don't work specially with that internal screw mounting rail. 100x60x30...

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

@zhong so thats about 7.5A @ 24Vdc? ~180Watts. Assuming 90% efficiency in the step down that's still over 150W delivered to the IH. Those transistors must be getting toasty. You could try reduce capacitance. 0.33~0.66uF range should be good depending on your coil. I'd experiment a little there...

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

@tuuwie Look for: N-channel MOSFET Low Rds ( < 20mOhm?) Vds breakdown 40v at least (Lower values *may* work, 60v is even safer) Vgs threshold should be low, below 4v. Low gate capacitance. Look for keywords in the feature description like: High-speed switching Small gate charge Low drain-source...

The auto-magic super rZToaster, or something like that..

@polykoma there are a lot of factors that affect the reading from an IR sensor largely the emissivity of the measured object (think shiny new cap vs charred black one) along with other quirks of the sensor itself such as being introduced to a temperature gradient. This sensor (MLX90614) does a...

The auto-magic super rZToaster, or something like that..

hi @polykoma :) Thanks to you and many others for sharing your enthusiasm for this project and sorry all for an overdue update. I'm still working on this VC IH. I've made great progress on the modularization redesign. My main three objectives above have been accomplished :) I built up a board...

VapCap Induction Heater for Desktop and in Car Use

@Fat Freddy you could go @phattpiggie on it when it's a little wispy, give it a little dunk to get some fresh oomph. Yes. When battery drops it will take longer to click.. Which would lead to a hotter tip by click time and less post click waiting. IH definitely has some quirks of its own...

Induction heated e-nail with arduino closed loop temp control

Hey @JCat That Cytron module you have is a LOT more than a PWM module! :) It is more than capable of driving your ZVS module (in the CORRECT configuration), but it is designed to drive motors, and is capable of 'flipping' the output around to make a motor go backwards - something you need to...

    Dynavap VapCap

Hang in there folks. Dunno about @Pipes and @VapCap progress, but designing electronics takes some time.. I just ordered my next batch of components, and hope to send my next PCB design out to get made soon (Version 0.3, if that means anything). It will still take a while to get manufactured...
