I too am very interested. One thing I have noticed is that the fresher the material is the lighter the colour. Maybe if it has been left to ripen for longer (more amber trics) it is darker?

I find the IR gun to be very accurate as long as I stick some black tape to the side my plates en measure on the tape. I have modified my cheap plates by adding a k-type thermocouple deep inside the plates. Temp on the PID's are now within one degree of what I read on the IR gun.

I managed to burn myself regularly in the first few weeks but since then no more burns.
