If you're using it with water the Lotus is the way to go, every time. It has an incredibly small form factor and fits onto most pipes with relative ease.

I don't think so. The Lotus I have was primarily used with the WPA, and was produced before there were two types of caps. It works fine! And hasn't charred yet.

I agree with the idea of purging it. However, it also sounds like you might need a replacement :( If the torch has randomly stopped working, and still isn't after purging, it's not looking good for the lil' guy.
