regulated vs unregulated power supplies for "log vapes"

Be careful with mounting the regulator. If it has a metal back on it, then that is live. The tape you found is to electrically isolate the chip from the case. Mica is usually used for this purpose. The regulator does need to dissipate a few watts, so it is normal for it to be generating a fair...

regulated vs unregulated power supplies for "log vapes"

u bwade wunner, seeing as you don't mind opening up the unit, try having a look at how the regulator chip is mounted. If you're keen you could bolt it to a piece of aluminium plate or similar to act as a heatsink.

regulated vs unregulated power supplies for "log vapes"

That's a bummer. The tattoo power supply that I got has been working well. I leave it on all day. It does get quite warm because the regulator chip is bolted to the case.

 Not around here it wasn't. It's certainly the most expensive though.

    What do you guys drink?

Beer: Erdinger Hefeweizen Liquor: Wild Turkey 101 Wine: I used to drink a lot of South Australian shiraz but I can't handle the intense hangovers any more

    What do YOU call vaping?

To my Australian ears this is hilarious... we use this as a derogatory term for an homosexual male, ie it's our word for "fag". I think it may be of British origin. I just call it vapour, as in "let's have some vapour", or I'll invite someone over for a "vapour sesh".

I agree too. I think this is a major step forward in log vape design. I've never liked the side plug design and the sealed bottom on most log vapes. I also don't understand why they cover up that beautiful wood with leather. I got the last "vegan" PD a few years ago that has no leather...

    Underdog Log Vapes

I recommend those elbow-shaped plugs. I've used the same one for years, no problems. There's no strain on the cord whatsoever. OTA, sorry to sound like a school teacher, but you what you are referring to is a "cord", not a "chord". A chord is something else completely!

Have you tried one of these? I think it's expensive for what it is, but it fits my PD more tightly than any of my other plugs.

    Underdog Log Vapes

That's great news. Seems like that is the way it should work. I'll contact the seller and see if they will send me a new one, as mine is basically unusable. I suppose it's always a gamble with this cheap Chinese stuff. I've also ordered one of the larger dimmers, hopefully that will work...

regulated vs unregulated power supplies for "log vapes"

Maybe poke it through a hole in the side of one of Dave's silicone stems? EDIT: Sorry I was vaped when I wrote this. Just reread your post above. The thermometers do take a while to get up to a stable temperature reading.

I don't think any fixed voltage PSU is a good idea. There are just too many variables to say that one size fits all.

    Underdog Log Vapes

Yes, you can safely run at a higher voltage than others. I should have explained this a long time ago. Although there is plenty of talk about voltages, it is actually all relative to a particular resistance value. What really matters is the amount of power being dissipated by the resistor in the...

regulated vs unregulated power supplies for "log vapes"

Yes, and that's why an unregulated power supply will deliver more volts than advertised at anything below full load.

    Underdog Log Vapes

Also the resistor in your particular vape has about 10% higher resistance than normal, so that will make it run 10% cooler. You will need to increase the power by 10% to get the same results as everyone else.

I'll also reiterate what I put in the power supply thread. There is no EU voltage "problem". It's just that the unregulated "12V" supplies used in America are probably supplying 13V+ to the vape. Then when someone in Europe gets a 12V supply (which is highly likely to be regulated/switchmode...

regulated vs unregulated power supplies for "log vapes"

There is a relationship between ohms, volts, and amps called Ohm's Law so the current drawn will change with voltage, given that you have a fixed resistance (the heating element in the vape). There is absolutely no difference between "American" power and "European" power. The only numbers you...

regulated vs unregulated power supplies for "log vapes"

You really wouldn't want a non-switching one. If your power supply was not a switchmode supply, then it would waste a lot of power and get really hot. It would need fans and/or a massive heatsink to get rid of the heat, and would use way more electricity than the vape itself. It would also be...
