battery discharge shouldn't really affect performance as it's a regulated device. When there is not enough power to heat at the temp you have set it will auto shutdown anyway.

I made the mistake of getting over excited and just took it out of the box and used it without thinking. It was a clean experience with no evidence of any oil or burn off needed. i did however clean it later that day, but am not convinced it was necessary.

I had broken the glass sleeve after dropping it a few times. Stopped using it for a few months and eventually got around to ordering new sleeves from TM. I fixed it and had it performing satisfactorily but wanted it hotter, so I calibrated to +1 above factory calibration. Much happier now.
