I see no reason why a gravity bong can't be used with a vaporizer, just like any other water-piece, if one so-desires.

It's the gasket that protects pretty much the only place the two plates make contact, and ensures smooth twisting (consider it a fairly solid form of lubrication). Most grinders of any type have one somewhere, except for extremely cheap grinders.
