Apart from cooling the vapor a little bit(not sure if that's very significant though),it gives you a nice visual of the vapor,so you know when there's none left to be had and makes for more controlled hits.

Ratio depends a lot on the quality of the product used(buds/bigger fanleaves,good weed/not so good etc.,etc.),but i wouldn't expect more than 10-15% and if it's only trim even a bit/lot less. Also i wouldn't try to use the Hash at all,that's just too dense to be suitable for this kind of extraction.
